The problem with doing line-ups based on streaming data is that the entirety of Spotify is not your target audience if you're planning a festival. Just because more people are listening to Hozier than The Who doesn't mean that more people who go to Glastonbury are listening to Hozier rather than The Who.

Also I think the numbers would be skewed depending on timeframes for the streaming data and who has released new music more recently/who is having more plays on the radio etc.

Having thought about it enough to write this post it has occurred to me how difficult planning a line up must be!

That is absolutely brilliant. I wasn't sure whether to brave the meet but that has sold it to me.

I particularly liked it in Hunted when you overdubbed the second guitar slightly out of time (or in an odd timing I didn't recognise) with the main guitar line, as if to support the lyric of not being sure who to be, as it came in shortly after that line.

A bit like the multiple personality thing that Richard Ashcroft would do with his vocals, if that makes sense?

I also liked the soaring sound in the song with that lyric (can't remember which one) EDIT: Nightingale, it's actually the word "Soared" that soars.

Quite - which is why when people say 'so and so is the biggest artist on the planet so should headline' it gets my goat.

Wow, that's all very lovely

Hunted did have drums and all sorts of other nonsense at one point. That guitar line worked around all that stuff. When I took it all away I liked how wonky it made the guitar part sound.

Ah yes, I like doing that.  When I build up a track and add loads of parts and then take away some of the earlier overdubs it often works quite well, even though they were composed to work with stuff that's no longer there.

I'm going through a bit of a Nick Drake phase at the moment, so this kind of guitar+vocal stuff is right up my street - even though I usually find most singer-songwriter stuff intolerable, especially modern stuff!

It's fun isn't it!? It's like finding another song hidden in the song. Peter Buck from R.E.M. used to talk about recording the song on acoustic then building synth and keyboard parts around it and then removing the guitar. That's a technique I've used a lot. 

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that Nick Drake has completely passed me by.

Weird isn't it? I consider myself a champion of the physical format. But I don't have a CD player and my turntable and speakers are in a cupboard somewhere. I've transitioned entirely to digital with out realising.

Interestingly, I very rarely remove the first part.  That tends to stay in.  I do generally make electronic music, so even if the original part stays in, it does get improved before the end. I believe that's actually fairly common -  a guide vocal or guitar line is initially laid down, but then re-recorded before the final mixdown.

So really, I'm talking about the first part staying in from a compositional perspective.

My Dad was recently no longer able to drive on medical grounds, so I inherited his old car ... along with big 6 CD multi changer in the boot. I absolutely love it. The car's an old banger, but I love driving it purely for the CD player!

In November I finally got rid of my old battered car. Really miss the cassette player in it as I now have nowhere to listen to my Burger Records Weiner Dog compilations
