Having said that, I was thinking about all the Faces gigs I went to. The first time I saw them might have been their second or third gig ever. Our mum had taken us to Birmingham to stay with some friends fr the weekend. I was listening to John Peel on the Saturday afternoon and he played a Faces song and said they were on at Mothers that night. I was about 15, my sister was 14, so we told our mum we're going out for the evening (our mum was quite open about these things..!)

We were underage (you had to be 18), so we lied about our dates of birth and got them wrong, but they just smiled and let us in! The electric keyboard wasn't working, so they did most of the set using the in-house piano. They were such a laugh, looked like they were genuinely having the time of their life on stage... and I was sold. I went on to see them loads of times after that. And apart from The Who, they my favourite live band. Absolutely reliably good, every time I saw them. I saw them once at The Roundhouse, a week after I saw The Stones there. I remember coming away from The Faces show having had a much better night our than I had for The Stones. Mick Jagger sneered at the audience for not being enthusiastic enough for him, whereas The Faces just turned the venue into a party for everyone.

This is how I remember them... and Mac.... . He seemed to be doing so well, and happy too.

Yeah it's so effortless for Rod. If I could pick one song to be able to sing and play piano to it'd be maybe I'm amazed I think, in the style of that clip

I cant get sound at work but your clip will be my evening viewing.

It always makes me seethe with env when you name-drop the stars you've supported and met. Knocks my "I met wayne coyne once" anecdote into a cocked hat.....

The Small Faces were in my view one of the sadly most under-rated and under appreciated bands of their time. They produced a great body of work that went well beyond their beautifully crafted three minute pop stuff.

Lovely organ here on Tin Soldier, with PP Arnold doing backing vocals.

An album well worth checking out is Ogden's Nut Gone Flake. Cracking pop on one side like Lazy Sunday and Afterglow. On the other side a lovely concept album, narrated by Stanley Unwin with some quite sophisticated, melodic stuff mixed in with mad, zany humour.
