I mean "white rock" as a wide-ranging genre and not a literal term, and those acts very definitely fit within that. Mike Oldfield clones and Zappa clones are very definitely white rock.

The fact that you're not able to realise that they're very VERY firmly "white rock" very definitely gets you right for the first time, with you saying "there isn't much hope of a meaningful discussion".

And the fact that you're not able to musically step outside of white rock to hear anything that's beyond the "just quite bad" which you described as the best world music you've heard says it all.

So I'm right when I say you're musically limited to white rock, and I'm right about the Sky TV. Just one to go... :)

And while you maybe don't vote tory, perhaps you're no less confused about your politics than you are musical diversity? I'd say that a quick summary of your many posts strongly suggests that you (or that you already vote tory).

a thread inviting people to generalise about one thing, ends up being about bigger generalising....

we don't need much encouragement at the best of times....

You use the term "white rock" purely to appear clever, somehow more elevated and sophisticated.

From where i'm sat I was merely trying to be accurately descriptive, but if you want to think me clever for that I'll let you. :)

All taste is normative, saying you like a type of music is really just saying you belong to, or aspire to belong to, a particular social group. In that sense I'm comfortable with your "white rock" - I'm working class after all.

and alternatively, giving a (in this case, a wide-ranging one) genre description is doing just that.

It's hardly anything off the wall for me to say that. From the bands you listed, what you listen to is very much of the same type - I don't say that as a critisicm, just as a fact. The fact that you find all world music awful just re-enforces the fact of you liking a particular type of music.

If you can't recognise that, I can't help you.

To help sooth your sensitivities, the music I listen to tends of be much the same type too ("not white rock" might be a good term for it, tho it's narrower than being all non white rock), and there was a time that I wouldn't have dreamed of listening to world music. Even now much of it isn't stuff I'd chose to put on, but I love getting exposed to stuff i wouldn't otherwise hear if i didn't go to womad, and there's always more than enough that's good that makes going back again worthwhile.

And of course I watch Sky - I read the Guardian too - all Guardianistas watch Sky, but that is hardly an insight, as I told you I did.

And other people have morals and don't knowing give money to the devil.

(BTW, I didn't claim it as an in insight. :))

To be fair to JB, I'd never describe Jan Garbarek as a rock musician. He is white, but I'd say that he was primarily a jazz saxophonist (a predominantly non-white musical genre)

but that's just me being pedantic :)

then perhaps I've been unfair to JB, and he got unlucky with the random Garbarek tracks I dipped into before I made that post (cos he's not someone I know). What I heard rhythm-wise sounded much more ploddy rock than it did anything remotely jazz.

Whether you know it or not you are claiming some sort of moral high-ground - I dislike the folk music of North and West Africa so I am morally inferior.

nope, that's merely how you've chosen to take all I've been saying.

The comment you've taken exception to was meant as nothing more than a lighthearted/pisstake comment of the "I'll be happy for you to stay away" kind, in response to what you said about your boss going and your views on world music.

I said "indie-landfill" without having a clue of your musical like, it was just an added part to the pisstake. But you then offered me up a challenge by giving me a list of bands, with me briefly dipping into a few tracks of the acts I didn't know - which did seem to pigeon hole you very much within a "white rock" area of music.

But hey, I guess you're a big fan of whooshing sounds too. :P

Is there a ring anywhere at the Festival? Maybe Thurs night before the old gits meet while it's still a bit quiet.

Which is better white rock music or world music? There's only one way to find out: FIGHT
