Hurricane / Southside 2012

Anyone got an idea when they'll announce who's playing where on which day? Thought it would be like Reading/Leeds with the whole days just alternating but judging by previous years they mix and match, i.e. this year Noel Gallagher and Blink-182 are playing Hurricane saturday, but Noel is playing Southside friday and Blink are playing Southside sunday. (according to their tour dates)

The Shins! That's a bit of a bonus, wasn't sure if there was going to be any more acts announced. Happy with that line up now.

A-Rob, we ordered ours from the official website and they sent them to the UK, we recieved them about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Just booked our Hull to Rotterdam ferry this week as well, a week in Bavaria and Berlin before heading to Hurricane, hell yeah!

Hi. I'm a Brit living in Germany and I'm heading to Hurricane next week. So far I've only ever been to UK festivals, and I was hoping some experienced Hurricane/Southside goers could help me out with ein paar Infos.

1. Will I be able to buy tents/a gazebo on site? At UK festivals, there's typically loads of reasonably priced camping supply shops.

2. What's the rules with taking drink in? Am I right in thinking that you can take anything into the campsite but nothing into the festival arena?

3. What time do people tend to arrive on the Thursday?

4. Is there somewhere near to the site where we can buy supplies (food/beer)? At Reading festival we had to do an hour long pilgrimage to get to the nearest supermarket

5. How safe are the campsites. I've seen Leeds fest on a Sunday night, it's chaos. I know how much the Germans love their fireworks, just wondering how the festivals compare.

6. Anything else I should know as a newbie to the European festival scene?

Thanks guys.

I've been twice before, so...

1. Will I be able to buy tents/a gazebo on site? At UK festivals, there's typically loads of reasonably priced camping supply shops. I honestly don't remember seeing any on site. Your best bet is to go to Bremen or Hamburg, or wherever you're coming from, and look around the shops there for camping stuff.

2. What's the rules with taking drink in? Am I right in thinking that you can take anything into the campsite but nothing into the festival arena? You can only take in cartons to the arena. They sell them in the shop on site. You could just drink it in the campsite then fill it with alcohol on the way in, the best way to sneak it in I guess.

3. What time do people tend to arrive on the Thursday? It opens at about 5, I think. So I just got there for about 4.

4. Is there somewhere near to the site where we can buy supplies (food/beer)? At Reading festival we had to do an hour long pilgrimage to get to the nearest supermarket There's a shop on site that sells a couple of things, like beer, juice, red bull, supplies etc., but there's a supermarket in the village about 30 mins walking distance from the campsite.

5. How safe are the campsites. I've seen Leeds fest on a Sunday night, it's chaos. I know how much the Germans love their fireworks, just wondering how the festivals compare. Yeah it's pretty safe, never had any trouble and they are friendly to one another. A lot of people speak English as well.

6. Anything else I should know as a newbie to the European festival scene? There won't be any piss throwing which is most welcome!

Hope that helps

Yeah just like a carton of orange/apple juice. Yeah they don't mind you bringing them in, so you could take in as many as want ha.

As far as I remember, I think a Beck's can is like a Euro or something like that. It's actually really quite cheap. A lot cheaper than UK fests ha.

The on-site drinks shop actually announced their offers for this year the other day. Water 1.50, half litre can of Becks 1.25 (says a lot about Germany that beer is cheaper than water), litre of wine (in a carton so you can bring it onto the festival site) is 3 euros, cans of rum and coke/vodka and cranberry/gin and tonic 3.50, red bull 2 euros. Pretty reasonable. Most of them include a Pfand too. Another thing you may be interested in, they will have a 'public viewing' area for the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, all of which are taking place on each night of the festival.

Less than a week to go now, cannot wait and touch wood the weather forecast is looking quite positive at the moment.

Sorry, one more thing. What time do we have to be out by on the Monday? And can anyone recommend the best (read: cheapest studenty) way to get back to Berlin?

And what does the on-site shop have in terms of food? Any chance of disposable BBQ's and some burgers?

I think you have to leave the site by noon on Monday.

Not sure about disposable BBQs, I don't recall see any for sale when I went to Hurricane

Yeah about 12 you have to leave, but they're not so forceful about it.

Nope they don't sell disposable BBQs. The shop only really sells like crisps/pringles as food. There's a couple of stalls in the campsite that sell food/burgers/pizza, and a breakfast one with tea and coffee. You'll have to bring a BBQ with you.

The best way of getting back to Berlin is to go from Scheessel to either Hamburg or Bremen and go from there, I presume. I'm not 100% sure, as I've only ever gone from Bremen, so not clued up on Berlin.

Hope that helps.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
