how does the fact that at a certain time of the year, when the sun sets or rises at a particular point, creating an interesting light, make them deserve to have their passports nicked?

The sun also creates a dramatic effect at Newgrange in Ireland where the building has been created to allow a small shaft of light to completely illuminate it on the morning of the winter solstice (if it's sunny!). See below

The passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated by the winter solstice sunrise. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn on the Winter Solstice and for a few mornings either side of the Winter Solstice.

I think it's nice in amongst all that madness and the speed with which we live our lives to suddenly have a moment where we see a sunrise or sunset. Something which stops us if only for a short while and allows us a brief respite from the injustice and absurdity of everyday living. It's experiencing those moments when I actually feel alive. Glasto is like it too. It's true freedom if only for a few days.

this is the way I see it...

with all the crap in the world, phone hackings, droughts, countries/continents on the verge of bankruptcy, people dying in hospital while on nothing more than a saline drip, it's hard to get particularly upset about people who like a sunset

I just don't see the similarity between New York and Stonehenge.
