Reasons for going to Glasto!

I thought it would be nice to share stories from the slightly mundane to the extremely soppy!

What makes Glastonbury so special for you? Be it this year (or any given year specifically), or just going in general.

Is it the cider? Is it a *special* friend?

Besides, this should be a very good way to count down all the lucky ones returning to the farm!

(and so sorry if this has been done a hundred times before!)

My friends all go. It's a chance to relax/party with them without a care in the world in one of world's most beautifully atmospheric places. Wonderful.

A few friends went years ago and loved it, so I thought I would give it a go. That was in 1998 and I haven't missed one since.

That its only 40 miles from home is a bonus too.

Threads like these deserve a bump. I went to Glasto origionally because it looked like a really unique experience like no other. Now I go because of that reason and also because I love discovering new things and because the atmosphere is really friendly aswell.

For a few days, every year, I just exist for myself. I don't worry about cooking, cleaning or kids. I don't have to worry about caring for my (pretty damn) ill Dad (although I do still worry slightly!)and I relax, amongst some of my favourite people in the World. I soak up the incredible atmosphere and smile, like an idiot, for no apparent reason other than I've switched off from the real World. Just for a while.

It starts the minute we get in the car, and ends when I get home and see the carnage that's happened whilst I've been away!

Because the normal rules of the world simply just do not apply for a solid five days. and those five days are the best five days of every year!

Without thinking, I have building up going to the big one for a few years now. Went to a small festie local to me a couple of years ago - had Mark Ronson and Calvin Harris playing. Had a fab time as we all got extremely drunk that day! This led me and my sis going to V last year - again had fab time. This year I really felt this was the year to go to Glastonbury. Having osteoarthritis in my hip (diagnosed at a young age quite a few years ago) I am not sure how long I will be able to manage such a long festival with manic dancing! Soooo glad we have made the decision to go this year, and after reading efests glasto forums, you lot have already made my mind up to go again in 2013!!!!!!

Have to say I havent felt this excited about anything for a long long time......

For one reason or another I've not often found myself in a position in life where I've been able to get away to festivals or similar, but over the last few years I've followed the event on the BBC and have had a really good time watching it, not only the main stage performances but coverage of all the other stuff that goes on, it's always been a case of "right... I'm gonna go next year!" but something has always come up and it's never happened.

Then last year I saw Muse's performance, I'm a big fan of their music anyway even though I've only seen them live twice but when they covered "where the streets have no name", I would've given pretty much __anything__ to be there because I thought it was truly beautiful, I also thought that the Edge and Bellamy being on the same stage at the same time was a special moment and I'd've given almost anything to witness it.

I've watched a lot of glasto performances on youtube of all my fav bands and it kind of makes me feel a bit remorseful at all the good memories I've missed.

So that's why I'm going(and will be going again!), to make some good memories and from what I've seen and heard, especially if music is a big part of your life, there's nowhere better on Earth to do that.

Used to be 100% about the music. As I have grown older and this my 20th Glastonbury, it is about just being there with my closest friends I have and having the best 5 days of the Year.

I almost didn't make it my first Glastonbury as I was trying to get a ticket for hours and was just about to give up and go to bed (that would never happen now btw). I got my ticket and was so excited it was untrue however my mate who was a glasto virgin too and driving us there decided to pull out. I managed to change her mind but she fell out with me over it! Anyhow I spent the whole festival on my own and in awe of everyone and everything. I completely fell in love it. My 'mate' on the other hasn't spoken to me since and it was 8 years ago! Apparently she was into her Speed which led to her paranoia/wierdness. god knows what she's up to these days.

Now I have brilliant group of friends I go with who make it extra special every year

I was going to say it's the people. We have a 'gang' of five who go every year as a lads week away and it wouldn't be the same without them. We also meet up with a gang of women friends and some of us also go to other festivals together but they're not the same as Glasto. So it's more than just the people.

On balance I think it's the late night sitting around the tent putting the world to rights conversations we have that seem to be engendered by the spirit of Glasto.

For a couple of years my daughter Lizzie came with us and we would spend the wee small hours discussing the state of the world and her plans for the future. From those festival conversations emerged her decisions to go to uni to study politics, to do a masters in International Development and this summer she's heading off to Cameroon in west Africa to help run a project working with orphan children. That's what Glasto is about.

After a twenty year break I start going to festivals again. After the deluge of 2005, and waiting for two years for a dry one, its 2007 and I've just had what remains my grimmest Glastonbury yet. I'm sitting in a MacDonald's somewhere off the A4 and I'm cold and wet and extremely fed up, with a broken down van in the car park, seriously doubting the sanity of this return to festival life at my advanced time of life.

My mate,who persuaded me (against my better judgement) to go in the first place, is trying to shake me out of my mood. He puts forward what remains for me the single most compelling reason for attendance.

"What else are you going to do that weekend?" he says
