Photos are a case in point. Since i got a digital camera I've taken thousands of pictures, shared hundreds on facebook, but have no prints. I'd always rather look through a physical photo album rather than looking at a computer screen. We've realised this recently decided we've got to start getting prints done otherwise we'll lose the memories that those albums would have held in the future.

Getting back toward Den's point on here, the attitude that everything should be readily available whenever we want it in this day and age is a big part of why this country (and the western world id general) is f#cked. We must be one of the few families in Britain that don't have any debt on our credit cards, or any store debt as I wait to buy things until I can actually afford to pay for them. It was how I was brought up and it's how i'll bring my little one up.

yeah i was thinking about this recently. although it's free and easier to view your photo's digitally, nothing beats looking through developed photo's and having someone moan about you for holding them wrong! it's something i want to start doing again. how expensive is it though?

Depends how many you're after getting. For example I've found a website that would do 500 prints for £25, bargain if you ask me.

I understand there are lots of reasons for people getting into debt. My issue is with people doing it just so they can buy something they don't actually "need" at that point in time rather than waiting a few weeks/months to save up.

i dunno, i'm talking going back 4 years worth of photo's. though obviously i'd be careful about which ones i pick as there will be thousands!

and yeah, getting into debt to buy a 3 grand telly for example. silly!

but i suppose we're all in debt in a way. i'm in debt to black horse for the next 2 and a bit years to pay off my car.

We're thinking of getting the odd one done as a large(ish) canvas print, seems a shame to waste all them millions of pixels.

That's the thing with digital cameras though, you'd never have taken that many photos with an old film camera. I think that maybe 1000 prints covering our last 5 years would be more than enough, certainly more than i'd have of what i'd done over the previous 5 years.

As for the debt, well I owe £218k still on our house so i'm massively in debt in that sense. The difference I see it is it's a sensible debt to take on, although i'm sure others would disagree. Same goes for your car, depending on your job/where you live, you may well need a reliable car, which may take more maney than you can get your hands on at the time. It's about being sensible with it though, not just borrowing for the sake of it.

This is a bit off-topic but has anyone ever considered that with a digital camera you're never going to bother developing/printing the photo's where you're squinting, got your mouth open, have half a head missing, hair sticking up at a ridiculous angle etc. etc. - you're only going to bother (apart from rare exceptions where something's particularly comical) printing the pics where yet everything is 'in shot'. Whereas, with your old film cameras, you never knew what you were going to get until you went to boots or the truprint envelope dropped through the letterbox. And whilst, obviously, something like a wedding picture where the groom's head is missing in the photo' is likely to be something of a disappointment (uless it's prince william where i'd think that would likely be an improvement to the photo'), it was the absence of 'perfection' in 'film' photo's that made them more 'real' and reflective of their actual subject rather than, with a digital camera, taking dozens of shots and only keeping one 'perfect' picture. It's lost it's organic/human quality.

I take it you mean that the process of producing the picture is more organic because you were stuck with a less than ideal image. I'd counter by saying that the digital process is more human because there is a person involved in it.

Yes, my terminology was awry with use of 'human/organic'. I suppose i've got a nostalgia for the imperfections/less than ideal results of 'film' photography and my, probably misplaced, view that it was somehow was more 'natural' and 'authentic' unlike the, more sanitised, digital photography where the whole technological process can be tamed by the user.

after all, the memory only comes with the experience afterwards, not with the initial buying. and the music memories come with just that. the music. i was going through my itunes last night and making up a playlist. and that little mp3 brough back so many memories from certain years. without a cd or a little notebook.

I can recommed Snapfish. Can you picture the big poster thing up on me wall --the collage of Little Wing? I got that done at Snapfish.

The quality is acceptable and theres always lots of offers on. When you register..you get free prints (40 I think, maybe more).

I think yer missing the concept of ATS! ATS is where parents buy things for their kids just "because"..and so that they can simply be like their mates. Your troos dont fall into that catergory (I hope).

I massively disagree with you reagrding the touchy touchy feely feely things we`ve been talking about mind.Of course.. listening to music brings emotion but to hold the LP or CD brings a heightened feeling of pleasure afaic.

And you are hitting the nail on the head with your little mp3 story..cos when,in a few years time, that little mp3 will be totally obsolete..you will at some point long for that little mp3.

I buy my clothes from charity shops generally or if I'm looking for something for a big night out or something special I go to Tkmaxx. It's not as good as it used to be though, since they changed their buyer

I will never understand people's love of trawling round shopping 'malls' paying over the odds prices for cheaply made clothing.

seriously? i'm happy enough with the cinema ones.

i could do with a new telly. mine is only 1080i and no freeview. had it for about 5 years but not stupid enough to get one when i can't afford it.
