Kendal Calling 2011

This year will be my first at Kendal and also my first festival camping :D

Some pretty brilliant acts announced so far, can't wait to see who else is playing.

Aside the music though, what else goes on around the festival that's worth taking a look at? x

looks like the local rivals at solfest have just announced their headliners and first few acts, the stranglers, cast, the saw doctors and the damned appear the most notable names on the list. Which festival do you reckon got the best headliners for their money then ? any of kendals youd swap for solfests ?

Def Kendal Calling - saw The Damned a few years back at Rock City and was completely disappointed :( ; The Stranglers were a laugh the one time I saw them without Hugh Cornwall - but nothing more... Give me The Levellers, etc. any day of the week! ;) The only band I would like to have seen at Kendal is 3 Daft Monkeys ... but, who knows, maybe they'll do both? :P

BTW, I see Dreadzone are supporting The Levellers on the 2nd leg of their tour - maybe Kendal too?

;)

So whats the general feeling about the 'boutique camping'. Personally, I think if somebody is stupid enough to pay £5k for a 4 day festival let them do it. Hopefully it'll mean the money it generates gets plowed back into the facilities for everybody (bands etc)...as long as it doesn't divert resources away from the general camping area, particularly in terms of security which was pretty scarce last year (when our tent got robbed the security guy we chatted to said loads had been turned over in the family area)

Only bit I'm not keen on is the 'express access'...sorry, a queue is a queue, if I get there at 9 and the doors open at 12 I don't want some tool with a bigger balance turning up at 11.55 and just go strolling past...its not a big jump from that to having a 'golden circle'...

Well, if we had 5 grand to spare we'd spend it on a campervan to be used at festival after festival, rather than blow it all on just the one festival! But, the trouble is, money talks - so it's kind of inevitable that the ability to throw cash around will buy you an easier time of it! - Just don't talk to us about golden circles - grrrrr

Riot Jazz Brass Band have put it on their website that they're at Kendal on 29th July. That's who I'll be watching if they're on after the main stage finishes again (they're not proper Jazz Flaminglippy, they're more Brass Band). In seeing the Wind Up Birds on Saturday in Leeds, and I'll try and have a word and see if they're back. Plans are coming together...

Agree with you both regarding the Lodge options. If it subsidises the lineup thats great, but I don't want their toilets emptied more often than ours !!

Oh please please please let it be so B)B)B)B).

One of my favourite festival bands for atmosphere and getting the crowd bouncing. They have one of the best frontment/singers I have ever had the pleasure of watching!!

Didn't 3DM's play at Kendal a couple of years ago? I have a vague memory of them.

Can anyone remember when KC sold out last year?

I only ask as i'm organising a stag to KC and have given people till a week monday to get me the money if they want me to buy the tickets for them (mainly the ludites who only deal in cash and think the internet is something fishermen use).

But now i'm getting twitchy as the stag has bought his ticket and i would hate for it to sell out before I get mine and any others.

If i buy say 4 upfront now would i be able to buy more online or is it restricted to 1 transaction per postcode?

I have emailed them as well but i know they frequent this forum so i thought i would put it here too :-)

Yeah, makes a massive difference. Only problem with the smaller festivals is if you end up accidentally synchronising your pee breaks with a stranger...swear to God there was this one guy I ended up next to every time I went for a slash at Kendal for the first couple of days...

whats everyone hoping for from the next announcement then ? do people think there will be a few more noteable bands announced or will it just be smaller bands / local bands or bands just starting out ? secretly hoping for a few more bands ive heard of to pad the line up out but im quite happy to go and see bands ive never heard of as well.

ive got tickets for the jim jones revue next week which im really looking forward to, can imagine theyd be in the price bracket for the festival and would go down a storm in a late night tent set. Not many bands seem to be able to mix jerry lewis style piano playing and punk style singing and guitars but it works well ! Detroit Social club must be worth a nod as well, theyre touring smaller venues almost nightly at the minute and always play a tight set.

    • They are going to have Blink 182 for sure, early June upto around Werchter weekend I'd say for them. Two of Sweden Rock,  Greenfield and RFP are going to miss out.
    • I've come across a few this weekend saying Deftones aren't big enough for Download.   I would recommend b&b hotel hbf the night before....cheap, comfortable and very decent. Within 10 minutes from the station and a tram stop outside to jump on...all travel is free during the festival time as well with a kombi. Lidl is very good and cheap I can't lie....€6 for a chair with carey handle, €20 with a bag too...you can work that out yourself.   If you camp, get up at 5am and go to the queue....literally don't question it as now I know.     The travel wise part is easy when you get the hang of it and I've never had an easier exit from a festival today tbh. We were camped in the turn left section but past the registration and to get water you have to come right out.   Opening up an exit through he camp at least by Friday morning when everyobe is there would be much better but you csnt walk through general if you're green and sonon.   I think the issue for me probably too is I have never taken like a mutliple litre water too, I've always done a 6 pack water from like poundland lol but you definitely need it. I had one shower that was cold lol   Talking of getting into the front, Volbeat was the only easy one, for Maiden and especially Linkin Park if you weren't in the queue for it by at least the last quarter ot Architects you had no hope....it was shocking. I do like orbit to sit down. I had to decide to sack off Within Temptation too or no chance.   Second stage biggest gripe is the faff of walking all the way round when VIP or whatever it is literally get access to each bit. I did read tbh before going people though RIP/Ring was turning too much the wrong way.   Also as a side note, caught some of Limp Bizkit last night too and they are not headliner but any distance at all. Yes they pull a crowd...they would do with LP finished but on the grand scale its a super weak booking. Stop, start for video recordings all the way through a headline set?, 1hr 15 minutes and you can't play for that time. I'm so glad they were not chosen to headline main.   On another thing, if RIP played it right they'll get GC and Avril to sub/second stage headline on the Blink day.   Toilets and cleanliness is a big plus I will say that.
    • Any of the likes of Keo, Basht. and Cardinals could all fit in here.  Although they’re the sort of bands that could fit many of the stages at Glastonbury
    • Glasto loves a come back act - how about the Rapture?
    • Yeah mentioned in the park thread but feel more Woodsies to me
