I know someone called Hugh Cumber. Unbelievable.

I want a boy called Cedric and a girl called Emma. Nothing to do with Harry Potter, by the way, I just like the names.

How old are you two? Who the hell is Geoffrey Hunton?

Nope I hate hats. I think it's a cute name for a little kid and it'll definitely be in fashion by the time he [he being my imaginary child] is a teenager.

I like names that are a bit different but not daft. The fact is most names will get the piss taken out of them wethere they be popular names or names that are a bit different. As long as you're not calling your son something like Arse Sniffer Smith. I'm sure it'd be fine.

Everyone has associations with certain names. I have them with "Annabelle" but I don't think I'd ever start mouthing off about the name particularly with the parents in earshot :P

A friend of mine has just chosen Jenson for his little fella. My first reaction was "Err, what?!" but having seen pictures of the family together and now he's a few days old, it just works. That's what he is and that's what he'll stay and good for them for going with something they liked instead of going with something they thought they should choose to appease everyone else.

We've practically given up trying to choose a name until the baby arrives. One of my brothers was without a name for days after he was born, whereas the other one was named pretty much instantly because he just was that name! We'll see what flavour ours is when it emerges and go from there.

If you really want to take it far, I did read on one of the mums forums recently that when choosing a name you should consider the following:

1. Picture it on a cup in a playgroup.

2. Picture it on a peg in school

3. Make a nickname out of it. Think about slang/any words the name might sound like.

4. Picture your child saying it on the first day of Secondary School. Picture the reactions of their peers.

5. Imagine the name being said by a mumbling teenage.

6. Imagine it being said at a graduation.

7. Think about it on a letterhead/list of company directors

You think you had problems, imagine what its like for kids from Sri Lanka, some of their names are immense!

Some friends jsut had a kid and gave him Buckley as a middle name. My mate is hot-air balloon pilot and wanted to call him Montgolfier, but wasn't allowed.

Who wouldn`t allow it? Those liberal-minded NZ authorities?

Buckley does have a NZ ring to it. Wish i was near you now, casting for a snapper fer breakfast. Bugger me--i`ve forgot the name of it... the very tip of North Island...a very spiritual place of the Maori... something Point? Its where the two seas meet..and you can see it from high above the waves. Whats its name.

We had snapper there. Its great to have a wife who can tie knots better than you and doesnt mind squid for bait.

aaaah!

My daughter named her son Sam, and was going to name her daughter Ella, but luckily picked up the obvious drawback before doing so!

She herself very nearly got called Rainbow. But her father wouldn't allow it. So she's got a reasonably sensible name.

My youngest son's Sion but everyone mistakes it for Sian and thinks he's a girl.

My friend's daughter's called Raven, which I really like.

Working in a children's play centre we come across all sorts of names from the old old fashioned (Humprey, Martha), classics (Jack, Sarah), modern variations (Braden/Brandon/Brendon) to random quirky (last month i did a party for Eleckra, and on the same day there was a Phoenix).

    • Judging by last night at Wembley, Luke Combs should be in the conversation of headliner. The UK is having a moment with country music so I don't think it would be particularly left field either.

    • It feels really busy this year, loads of big groups of youngsters too. Slightly different vibe to previous years I've been. As with Tramlines, they're very chatty during sets and there's a constant stream of them in and out of the crowd... definitely feeling my age 😂   The Quarry stage I think is a lot smaller than previous years - seems similar size to Squid/Leadmill. Some sets have been difficult to get in.   I think I've reached my limit with mid-tier indie guitar bands. There's been quite a few this weekend where I've gone over to see them then walked away after 20 mins. Surprisingly, enjoyed the Fratellis set the most in this genre. Probably getting on for 20 years since I last saw them. Wasn't expecting them to do Yes Sir, I Can Boogie, which was fab!   Hugely enjoyed the Happy Mondays yesterday, and same but different with Radio Free Alice who I saw again on Friday, following Tramlines last weekend. A big run of pop acts today - Scissor Sisters will be fantastic!
    • I have a spare campervan pass to get rid of.  unable to use Kaboodle as it is only entry that they re-sell
