Will my flag get stolen?

However, there is no getting away from it but the Confederate Flag is still considered by many (inc me & some of my friends) to be one of the most rascist flags in existence. Sorry!

Hello

This is the family's first year at Glastonbury; 2 boys (20 & 17), wife & me in a camper van...mixed emotions already but I am sure it will be fun.

So I have bought a flagpole and confederate flag, nothing too fancy, to get into the swing of things.

But someone at work seemed to think that sometime over the weekend it will be stolen.

I have read a few other threads and people talk about their flags coming back year after year, and those flags look far more sophisticated than mine.

So should I be taking it down every time we leave the van or are Glastonbury folks more trustworthy?

Your thoughts would be appreciated...

I think I will be ordering a new flag from SkyBlue tomorrow, I chose the flag because of Daisy Duke not realy from a racist perspective!

Everytime I see your flag it reminds me of a very pissed up barbeque one summer about 12 years ago when 3 drunken grown men tried to get into said car which belonged to my (then) 3 year old and was sitting enticingly in our garden!! He was gutted when he came home from his nana's a couple of days later and 'Brum Brum' was broken, with its wheels pointing in strange angles!!

Hes nearly 15 now and I don't think he's ever forgiven them!!

Your getting a flag because of daisy duke? Your getting a Confederate Flag because of a character from a lame and even worse remake film. Seriously?

I can't think of a flag that does a worse job of being out of place at glastonbury.

That flag sums up racism, a divided union, slavery, ill-education and poor american tv writing. What part of glastonbury does that mean to you?

If i see flags like that or people flying those flags, then your going to have your flagged pulled down or 10 minutes of your live ruined

I've got to take issue with that statement. It's simply ill-conceived and ignorant. The causes of the American Civil War are complex and are about far more than simple slavery. A divided union? Legally the southern states had every right to secede from the union, the union was just that, a *union* of states (each with it's own laws as is still in evidence today) as opposed to a single sovereign nation. That aside, several slave states fought with the north. In Lincoln's famous Proclamation of Emancipation contained in the Gettysberg address he freed the slaves of the states only that were in rebellion, not the slaves in the states that sided with the north.

The vast majority of those who fought for the confederacy fought for the south, their homes and their states rather than for slavery. And the flag we're discussing is actually a battle flag, it was never an official flag of the Confederacy.

To simply equate it with racism is profoundly ignorant. It represents the south, Mississippi for example still have it incorporated into their state flags to this day. You still see it on album covers from many southern rock bands (Lynyrd Skynrd and the Charlie Daniels Band spring to mind as examples). Are they then by implication racist?

I am very strongly anti-racist, and I have no issues whatever with people flying a Confederate battle flag. I'd argue that many see and fly it as a simple 'rebel' flag to represent a concept. That doesn't make those who fly it racists or pro-slavery. To draw parallels with swastikas is simply ludicrous.

It's a complex subject that obviously is very touchy, and all too often a discussion on it can quickly degenerate. I'm glad it didn't. And my apologies if any of my post came across a little strong.
