A Wayne Rooney that doesnt score is almost completely useless. Thats the difference between him and Messi - Messi hasnt scored yet but has been arguably Argentina's best player in the first 2 games.

I can see both points of view, a defoe/ crouch partnership would possibly be the best to beat slovenia and advance in the tournament however I feel that partnership will only take you so far. The top class teams would fancy their chances of stifling crouch and defoe 2 players with very little champions league/big international game pedigree.. However you drop rooney the effect it would have on his morale would be huge. For England to convert an ok world cup to a very good one (after todays game a bit of a stretch I know) they will only do it if they get the best out of rooney. To me its worth the risk of a group stage elimintation hoping he will come through rather than settle for a second round/ qf if lucky exit.

Anyone with even half a brain can see that Gerrard should play off Rooney with Joe Cole on the left. This puts Rooney in his usual Scum position, pushes Stevie G forward and central and brings in the unpredictability of J.Cole. Easy! Give me the job. I'll do it half price.

It seems most people are under this assumption, I however am not so sure. Consdiering a few weeks ago capello thought upson was a better option, what has changed to push dawson up the pecking order.

Upsons seen as too similar to Terry. Dawson brings some pace to the position. Quite why Carraghers there ahead of either of them I honestly don't know. Going off either form or ability, he's well behind both the other two.

Teams needs mixtures of talents... You can have 11 Messis but you are going to get dicked....

All our players are of good quality and do various roles for their teams but too many of them need to be complimented by other good players... aka look at the service Rooney gets week in week out at United... SWP / Lennon < Giggs / Nanni

Rooney shines because of the service he gets and the freedom he has by having such good players around him... Gerrard has had a team pretty much built around his style at Liverpool... Lampard the same at Chelsea... and so forth...

When you get all the England players together its more of a case of round holes and sqaure pegs... None of them compliment each other and the English of football is pretty shite and very one trick pony....

I would suggest that Rooney supported by Gerrard, J.Cole and Lennon is miles better than anything United could offer him. Add to that the goal threat of Lampard and i just dont get why we are so ineffective. It must be that heavy shirt.

I guess at least we didn't lose, and it's still in our hands. I'd like to get through teh group but not too bothered about getting any further as we'd be over-achieving.

That was the worst I've ever seen Rooney play, he was weak and embarrassing. Gerrard wasn't much better. I thought Heskey held the ball up well sometimes and he seemed to be one of the few players who was actually trying, but the formation just didn't work. Heskey was in midfield half the time... playing a 4-6-0 formation. Just a really disappointing and passionless performance overall.
