Oh - I forgot Trevor Francis. Complete bell end.

"Well he goes down the left wing, crossed with his right foot and the lad has done well to jump - a good header - and that's 1-0."

Yeah, thanks Trev you f**king boring Jasper Carrot-esque ballsack. I can actually see what happened, but just in case Stevie Wonder is watching, you've made all the difference. You wannabe Brummie prick.

During the last World Cup, the BBC had the best pundit I've seen in ages - Leonardo. The guy was brilliant - knew his stuff and was funny with it. I'd love them to get him back.

Best moments of punditry during the last World Cup (both courtesy of the BBC):

1. In-match commentary with Steve Wilson and Mick McCarthy:

SW: Do you know what this referee does in his spare time, Mick?

MM: I dunno. Is he a part-time wally?

2. In the studio at half time during a Sweden game - the camera pans to a couple of VERY attractive Swedish laydees wearing very little.

Leonardo: All they need now is a Brazilian.

One of the worst football commentators has to be Carlton sodding Palmer.

The man was a member of England's worst football team, then went on to be player-manager of two clubs who he gloriously led to the next division (shame it was a lower division, the numpty), a defensive midfielder who, as player-manager, frequently decided to play himself as lone striker.

After just two games in charge, Stockport went on a record equalling nine consecutive defeats, after which Palmer started his series of disillusioned ramblings by saying, "Who is to say I will not be manager of England in 10 years' time?" Only Carlton knows how much post he got after that comment, but there was little surprise that the defeat’s record was broken in their next game.

Stockport’s rapid relegation was also a record and they equalled the biggest number of defeats for a Division One team in the process. They then started the 2002/03 season hovering around the Division Two relegation zone. Unsurprisingly, the County fans were not too happy with the catastrophic plight of their beloved club, to which Palmer shockingly responded with, “I’ve been in the game a long time and know football supporters are fickle.”

A very late flurry of wins ensured that Stockport just about managed to keep their place in the prestigious world of Second Division football. But come 2003/04 and enough was enough - Palmer was given his well-deserved P45. With an abysmal record of just 25 wins from 92 games and County back in the relegation zone, the surprise was that he had lasted 18 games let alone 18 months.

Of course, despite losing over 50% of his games – most of which were played in a Division lower than the one he started in – Palmer, had his own, unique way of looking at things, “I'm obviously disappointed. It's more to do with politics than football, but I don't want to elaborate.”

Where Sky let themselves down is doing things with the pundits like they did for Chelsea-Inter last week. They had Souness (pretty good), Gullit (pretty good) and then....Jamie Redknapp. That clueless nonentity manages to cancel out the good of the other two, only serving as entertainment when Souness metaphorically slaps him around for talking rubbish. During half-time in the United-Liverpool game he got argued down by Michael 'charisma' Owen, presumably deferring to Owen because he at least has some memory of running in on goal.

Like Tyler, good-often paired with Andy Gray, bad. Or Alan Smith-woeful, paired with anyone better, which is anyone. There's no consistency.

I find Ruud Gullit and Graeme Souness the best to listen to.

One of the worst is when MOTD2 gets Robbie Savage on. w*nker.

I also don't get why people hate Andy Gray so much. I don't think there's a better commentating partnership than Tyler and Gray (well, except that classic Steve Wilson - Mick McCarthy combo in 2006 obviously). I can forgive pundits for being irritating if they know their stuff and come up with interesting viewpoints and Gray does that. He doesn't moan for moanings sake like Alan Green, Gary Birtles etc.

nope.

he was interesting 20 years ago but footballs moved on and his analysis is as childlike and banal as lee dixons

plus, his very obvious 'big four' + everton bias is now wearing thin.

so i'd like to propose a meet, before the usual cider bus meet, for all us footy fans to get together and watch england finish off their group stage games and progressing to the last 16 (are you listening scotland)

it's the biggest sporting event in the world, which happens every 4 years. it's a big deal for football fans, so yeah you are missing something.

unfortunately i missed the culmination of the euro's because of glastonbury in 08 and i missed the world cup final in 06 because of t in the park. i would like to see as much of it as possible and if glastonbury can help this in anyway, it would be good if it did.
