rubbish

1. So do you think any of the people who responded (including me) would have dropped litter or left rubbish or mess at the Festival if it hadn't been for this thread? Of course we wouldn't! None of us needs someone "banging on" about it.

2. If people want to do something positive about the rubbish problems at Glastonbury, then do somthing practical when you get there.

We never leave at litter, couldn't cope with the guilt, having had it drilled into us from a early age :P

And it's not very nice having to sit surrounded by rubbish whilst trying to eat in some of the fields. Not to mention the smell!

A guy we met left his camping chair behind, but he packed it up and left it leaning on a hedge so it could be re-used.

  • 4 weeks later...

2000aftergf.jpg

This is from the timelapse of yr 2000.

Monday evening with estimates of 250,000 people at times on the site for the weekend.

Note the distinct lack of carnage & discarded debris - yeah there is rubbish but a million miles away from the video footage earlier in the thread.

I've seen similar vids of this on youtube. It really shocked me because I (naively) thought that lots of people were keen to follow the "Leave no trace" slogan. I for one won't be leaving my rubbish like that.

I'm surprised Michael Eavis still lets there be a Glastonbury festival if the place is left in such a state each year.

No cejx it's not too soon to start getting that message out. As Grumpyhack and madyokel have said, it really isn't difficult to clean up after yourself (and I speak as a stranger to housework, so if I can be bothered to pick over my camping space.....).

Smokers - get a butt pouch - yes I know it sounds unbelievably rude but it's a little insulated bag thing that you can stub your fag ends out in wherever you are then empty into a bin when you can. Given away free at cig stalls at Wychwood last year and really neat.

Sadly we live in a throw away society. When you can buy a cheap tent from a supermarket for £20 a lot of people can't be arsed to pack them up and take them home - especially if it's raining on the last day. A lot of people are wet, dirty, tired and just want to get home.

I don't think it helped a couple of years ago when there was the "leave your tent for recycling" campaign. It wasn't clear enough that the tents had to be packed away and handed in in a useable condition. A lot of people thought it just gave them permission to walk away with a clear conscience leaving their semi-wrecked tents standing where they'd put them up.

Don't think any video would change the mind of some people...Ok i am not into the sorting and recycle stuff, but we don't leave anything behind, i bag it all up and dump it by the bins in the camping area. I do think some bring far to much with them, just take your basics.

We camp a lot and as no more than simply habit the last thing we do before we leave is check the ground for anything left.

Sounds simplistic but something in the fine guide telling people to bring binbags and posters asking us all to put our crap in them would be a start.

My pet hate is fag butts, it seems that plenty of people who would probably not throw a crisp packet think nothing of dropping a fag butt as soon as they are finished even when they are in sight of a bin!

My rant done now.

What I struggle to understand is that in times like these when costs of general living go up diproportionslly to wages that people still cant find the energy to pack up & clean up no matter what state they are in come Monday. Even if the tent only cost ?£. Some of the tents that are left cost way more than this.

It just makes me angry :P

M Eavis essentally invites everyone to his house for the weekend for the words greatest party - fair enough we all pay 200 notes for the privalage.

You wouldnt leave bottles of piss & tents literally full of shit @ your friend house so why @ Worthy Farm

There is just a gross lack of respect somewhere in all this.

The picture posted above shows it damn clear how much times have changed since the fence. no matter how else the fest has evolved to survive this is definately one thing that was better in the old days

I'll own up and say that the rubbish thread has improved me a bit.

i always thought i was OK because we never leave rubbish just lying about as such, but we did used to just leave it bagged up where we had camped.

Now take it to the designated areas, it wasn''t wilful laziness - more blissful ingnorance!

This is from someone who does stuff like, if i drop a cup somewhere in the middle of a set, I make sure I pick up someone else's on the way out to make up for it! I think most of us could just think a little more.

Oh - the other one was the tent pegs - years ago i would never have been bothered by losing a couple of tent pegs, then I found out the thing about the cows eating the mashed up shards of them and the damage it can do - now we make sure we get every last one!

This thread seems to have pricked the conscience of a few people. Let's try the videos as well and show them on all the main stages.

I work at another festival where, unlike Glasto, the land doesn't belong to the festival organiser (I know that ME doesn't own all the land but bear with me).

The site is rented from a family that the rest of the year run it as a Caravan Club site.

Unless it's completely clean at the end - and that means every fag end and every piece of silly string - the festival organisers won't be able to rent it again the following year.

If people realised that leaving a dirty site threatened the continuation of the festival they might be a bit more thoughtful.

Mind you in my student days the best way to get a clean flat was to have a party. You tidied it a bit beforehand and then really cleaned up afterwards - hopefully with the help of a few mates.

Hear hear. I'm going to tweet this nearer the time, and make sure everyone in our group clears up after themselves. If you can carry it in, you can carry it out.

It really doesn't take too much effort to pick a bag up and take it down to the rubbish collection areas, there are plenty of them, even if you just bag it up and leave it, it's easier for the clean up people to take the bag than to pick every bit up, but we're on our way out anyway, what difference does carrying a bin bag make?
