Bowie "Asked to perform"

About an hour ago the Daily Mail published a news story claiming that Bowie has been asked to come out of retirement to play.

The article, tracked by Google, is not currently available on their website.

In itself - him being asked - would not surprising at all.

Interesting that the article has been pulled though. Quite a few possible reasons, some very mundane of course.

Wonder if he's still in the frame, in spite of everything?

All I could see is

Was there anything else worth saying in the rest of the article? Bowie would be bloody fantastic, maybe he could do the Saturday? He's probably the biggest solo artist they could get apart from Macca who has played too recently.

Would love bowie, but how's his health now?

saw him in birmingham in around 2003-04, and saw him come on for the encore of the gilmour royal albert show to do arnold layne and comfortably numb (which I possibly his last public performance ).

i bought a ticket for t in the park in '04 specifically to see him. i've had a thing for him since i was 11 but have never seen him live. he had his heart scare the week before t and the darkness replaced him as headliner. i'm still receiving therapy for that.

I've just done the search on google but it won't show the dm article.

Why would they be so hush hush about it it wasn't true? There has been loads of speculation around potential headliners and they haven't been pulled off the net.

It would be fantastic if he played!

I wouldn't get too excited. Bowie has been asked to perform at Coachella every year for several years and refuses every time. Of course, he probably has some sentiments attached to Glasto, so who knows. Seeing Bowie anywhere would justify the trip to Europe, but at the best festival in the world that's worth flying out for regardless of lineup? My mind would explode if these two pieces of epic combined.

It was believed within music industry circles that Ziggy Stardust had hung up his microphone for good.

But the Daily Mail has now learnt that David Bowie has been asked to come out of ‘retirement’ to perform at next year’s Glastonbury Festival.

The 62-year-old has been formally approached to be one of the headline acts at the festival’s 40th anniversary next year – almost four decades after he first played there.

The star – who has sold an estimated 136 million albums in his career - is currently considering the offer from his home in the US.

If he does agree, the appearance would be Mr Bowie’s first concert in six years, since he suffered a heart attack while on stage in 2004.

A source close to the singer said: 'David is considering the offer.

'He hasn’t played a concert for a long time and some people had even wondered if he had basically retired.

'But when Glastonbury approached him, he decided it was something he would certainly be happy to look at.

'After all, he’s always had great experiences when he has played there in the past. And it might be time for him to have one last hurrah there.'

Mr Bowie has appeared twice before at the festival.

He first appeared in 1971 – in the festival’s second year - when Julie Christie and Jean Shrimpton attended and it was headlined by rock acts Hawkwind and Traffic.

He then returned to the Somerset location again in 2000 to triumphantly headline the event. Afterwards, event founder Michael Eavis labelled it the best Glastonbury ever.

Bowie suffered a chest pain while performing – as part of a world tour - at the Hurricane Festival in Scheesel, Germany on 25 June 2004.

It was diagnosed as an acutely blocked artery and an emergency angioplasty was performed at St Georg Hospital in Hamburg.

Mr Bowie afterwards admitted he had suffered a minor heart attack, resulting from years of heavy smoking and touring.

Since then, Mr Bowie has lived quietly in New York with wife Iman and nine-year-old daughter Alexandria, making rare public appearances.

If he does agree to perform at Glastonbury, which will take place from June 26 to June 28 next year, he will join Irish rock giants U2.

They were confirmed as one of the headline acts last week with Mr Eavis saying: 'At last the biggest band in the world is going to do the best festival in the world.

'Nothing could be better for our 40-year party, and there are even more surprises in the pipeline.'

In 2002, Mr Bowie was ranked 29 in a BBC survey of the 100 Greatest Britons.

I would have thought the headliners would be booked by now? Surely he will have already said yes or no

Either way I hope he does it!

On the one hand it would be AM-AZ-ING. On the other hand it would suggest the other headliner(s) haven't been booked yet which surely must mean the Stones aren't really in the frame that much? If Eavis was trying to persuade Jagger & Co into playing there's no way he'd start trying to coax Bowie into performing.

Chances are it was all made up bollocks and his lawyers got it pulled as soon as they heard about it.
