A serious question - Are U2 still any good live?

2. Sad as it is, the "nonsense" you posted is no different to a lot of stuff that other people post in all seriousness about any number of bands on a daily basis.

i saw them about 5 times since the early 90's and ZooTV and Pop were awesome gigs. Recently though their material sucked big time and their latest show at Wembley was well lame.

Poor sound, poor setlist, too much corporate bollocks (Blackberry branding everywhere) and the supposedly 360 stage was 120 at best (pity those poor sods sitting to the side or at the back).

IF and that's a big if they cut the crap and put together a setlist worthy of the occasion it could turn out to be one of those memorable glasto gigs...however if they rock up, and play their current show it's gonna be dreadful.

Ok... here's my take on U2.

I was only ever a casual obsever of them however I saw them on Glasgow in the summer, and was so impressed I drove to Cardiff at the weekend to see them again.

My view is that there are bands who, when a single feature is compared, have;

better songs

better anthems

better voices

better musicians

better personalities

better entertainment

better speeches

better lyrics etc etc

However U2 put it all together and find a level on stage to create THE best show any rock fan could witness. No one has a better show than them... sure they won't have it all at Glasto but they'll pull a different set list out the bag and I'm sure more than a few surprises.

They are born crowd pleasers, and they will already be thinking about what they can do to make their set the most memorable.

Sure, Bono is a bit of a twat and thus opinion is polarised on them, but if you are willing to just stand there and let them perform to you as a fan of live music I don't think you will be dissapointed.

I'm not a crazy U2 fan who hails them above any other, and don't own more than a few cd's but the guys put on a good show and I wouldn't want someone to miss that just because they think they are over hyped, egotistical bawbags.

I think it's because of the comaprative success of the FFF that the U2 lovers know they daren't describe their favourite band as the best without swift and divine retribution

In order to ascertain whether they are the "best" as you say, you will have to have objective data on every other performing band on the entire planet. That's what best means you see. Better than everyone else. Ussain Bolt, for example, could lay claim to be the best at running 100 meters, because there is a competition which he enters which everyone in the world could also enter to find out who is the quickest over that distance. I am not aware of a similar competition that U2 have won recently. When was the "World Cup of Music" and who did U2 beat in the final and over what distance to win Gold?
