I cant believe I'm going to do the following thing but here goes:

Live at Glastonbury - Idiotech is pretty well known as a damn good electronic and dance orientated tune. In fact Radiohead fart around more with samplers and boards than a lot of dance artists these days yet they are still classed as a 'band'.

The line between 'dance' and whatever we class the other kind of music is called is far too thin these days.

The charlatans are a mystery to me, how they've scraped a living for 20 years baffles me, they've been appalingly mediocre for at least the last 10 years. Thery've got a long way on very very little. Handful of half decent singles and they've made a living like that for half my life. Unbelieveable.

In the words of Duke Ellington there are only two types of music....good and bad. Does it really really matter what was used to create the music or play it live? Surely the artist(s) that created the music have a right to showcase it live. People making silly comments about why not just play an i-pod...why couldn't a guitar band do this too? Admittedly a dance act will most likely have less to do on stage but its still their music that is making people dance, or not. With the dance acts there is more often than not a brilliant light show or visuals (see Chemical brothers 2007) to enhance the experience.

Every new form of technology for making or playing music is severely criticised by the establishment as people naturally don't like change and won't accept that something new could be as good as there own established favourites. Even the first modern piano and electric guitars were heavily criticised by purists.

So in my opinion if the musics good then why not enjoy the fact that someone has made it for your listening, not worry how it was made, If you don't like it don't listen to it.

I've just remembered the best arguement i'd ever had about rock music vs dance music. A lad I was at uni with was obsessed with drum and bass, didn't listen to anything else. I made the point to him one day that whilst he enjoyed it there wasn't much to it musically, just lots of computer generated rhythms and bass sounds. His response to that was that drum and bass was better because a computer cost more than a guitar

You see, I love the squelchy uplifting mind-jolts that decent dance music can throw at you, I'd hapilly see Eat Static or the Chemical Borthers, but I love to see the passion and enrgy of a band creating fantastic music, I'd lap up likes of Love with Arthur Lee or the Foo fighters, I also like to sing along to music, I find it I'm watching a pure dance act with no vocals I end up singing the melody whilst dancing. But I like it when all the elements are combined, take Dreadzone for instance, their album 'Sound' is a brilliant blend of dancey electro tunes and samples, fat basslines, melodies and drums from talanted musicians, excellent vocals of Earl 16 and MC Spee. All this makes for an amazing dance experience from an energetic and talented band. Also the likes of the carnival collective when they start playing their drum and bass numbers are something to behold... ahhhh

Arguing about names brilliant. Although surely Chemical Brothers is fairly unsubtle and self-explanatory? As has been mentioned, there's an almost unlimited number of terrible act names in all genres, too!

Not only do they"not use instuments in the traditional sense"....they dont use instuments at all.
