Because watching someone playing an instrument is inherently entertaining.

Whereas watching someone trigger a sequencer is not.

I'm not saying that sequencer acts can't be entertaining. Nor am I saying that the work they do before the show, of setting up the sounds and the sequences, isn't highly skilled. I'm saying they have to work extra hard because of that missing piece of having someone up there channeling music from their brain through their fingers, to the instrument.

i quite like some dance music and electronica but i will say this... there is a vast difference amongst the dance genre... for example I've seen chemical brothers a few times and really they could have just put a CD on, there was no vibe or atmosphere coming from the stage at all and i just felt like i was at a nightclub (which i wouldnt mind if i'd payed club prices to get in but Brixton costs more!!), i've seen Deadmau5 too and felt somewhat similar.... and then theres Prodigy! Oh My God what a live set! i absolutely loved it... the vibe was energetic, loud and entertaining and they interacted with the audience from start to finish... now THAT is the live dance set for me - they had me jumping out my skin! amazing!!! i think all music is valid, theres something for everyone! :(

I don't take drugs (I'm guessing in this example we're talking pills etc?).

I like guitar music.

I like dance music.

You can drraw your own conclusions.

Why do dance acts have such stupid names? I mean, I know there are a few ridiculous names in other music (can I say 'proper music' without it sounding ignorant?) but come on - some of the names of dance acts are just plain stupid.

Fatboy Slim - what?! Make your mind up. I know you're called 'Norman' so obviously felt the need to change it, but is that the best you can do?

Moby - yeah, only because you're just INVITING everyone to add 'Dick' afterwards. Asking for trouble.

Chemical Brothers - Chemicals? Why chemicals? You sound like a crime-fighting duo.

Daft Punk - oh come on, have you ever met a punk who ISN'T daft? Why not change your name to 'Miserable Emo' or 'Greasy-haired Teddy Boy'?

Someone just mentioned 'Deadmau5' - who the f**k comes up with that sort of a name? Reminds me of a new efests member who really hasn't thought about their username. Either that or it's actually a robot - Deadmaus 1 to 4 were obviously just a bit shit.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Some quality posts here!! Live dance music is alive and well!! Some people will always have hangups about a noise that comes out of a machine that does not have a corresponding arm movement to quantify it...and some people will just never like dance music due to personal taste...just the way it is..

The Magical Sounds tent at Bearded Theory had a massive live instrument dance act representation, we had everything from a Sarangi through didge to full band with bass, guitar, keyboard, drums etc etc...

I can totally see the point people are making about the single DJ pressing buttons which is why a good dance tent should be an aural and visual stimulation of the senses and people should feel happy to smile and interact...

and anyone that still believes after 20 odd years that dance music can only be enjoyed on drugs is very very silly :(

I've just remembered the best arguement i'd ever had about rock music vs dance music. A lad I was at uni with was obsessed with drum and bass, didn't listen to anything else. I made the point to him one day that whilst he enjoyed it there wasn't much to it musically, just lots of computer generated rhythms and bass sounds. His response to that was that drum and bass was better because a computer cost more than a guitar :(

What and all the K bands have better names because?

(By K bands I mean the sudden influx of bands starting with the letter K who arrived a couple of years back.....Kasabian, Kooks, Kings of Leon, Killers etc)

    • I was hoping that they would just do a tour like they were set to in 2020, rather than having Download as their UK appearance. If they are at DL, I would be surprised to see them headline. I think they sub under Deftones or SOAD
    • well, we might know by the end of next month if they drop the lineup early again
    • I'm definitely not camping 🙂.  My 17 year old Daughter and her friends are there 3 days and commuting back to Sheffield each day as didn't want to camp .  I am taking and picking up the Saturday so thought I may as well get a ticket as love Fontaines DC - need to do a lot of research on the other acts though to fill my day.    I walked through the camp site other year the day Arctic Monkeys played and it was like a War Zone.  My Son has camped a couple of times but didn't fancy my Daughter staying over.
    • Not at all impressed with Polanski saying "noone should be barred from public life" wrt the Tory neo-nazi. I really don't think "no nazis in politics" should be an excessive standard.
