Will Glasto 2009 be cancelled?

Hi,

I'm seriously worried that they might force Glastonbury 2009 to be cancelled due to Swine Flu. It better bloody not be as it's so close now and for all intents and purposes the piggy flu doesn't seem that bad!

I've read in some places that the organisers would have to consider it if the W.H.O. raised the alert thing to level 6 which they now have. (see BBC news)

Now, my idea is this - give those people who are worried and don't want to go the chance to opt out of the festival and refund them. Let everyone else who doesn't mind the slight chance of getting a bit of a cold go and enjoy it!

There is currently absolutely no reason for anything to be restricted at all. In the northern hemisphere, which is coming into summer, the instances of Swine Fever will fall naturally as the atmosphere gets less damp.

In the autumn when the weather changes the instances will increase hugely, and a decision will be taken at that time as to whether any restrictions will be needed (it'll come down to the availability of vaccines and the like at that time).

If people were to spend the same amount of time actually listening to what's being said as they spend making posts about something they don't much bother to listen to then all this scaremongering could be avoided.

It's a load of crap anyway, most people are suffering mild symptoms at the worst, and are recovering quickly.

There is no way - on current pig flu outbreaks - that Glasto or any other events will be cancelled.

Just think what else aould have to be cancelled:-

Wimbledon, The Ashes, Oasis stadium gigs, Take That concerts, British Grand Prix etc, etc.

It is all a fuss over nothing. It is hospitalising no more people than a bog standard flu.

incorrect - it's hospitalising fewer than bog standard flu as a proportion.

However, that needs putting in context: come the autumn, many more people will get Swine Fever than would normally get bog standard flu, so it is likely that many more people will end up needing hospital treatment.

And now that needs putting in context: those that will need treatment are very likely to only be those with pre-existing medical conditions of some kind, such as asthma - much as is the case with bog standard flu.

It's not a very virulent form of influenza, current statistics indicate 27,737 official cases, with 140 deaths attributed to it. Of these, 106 were in Mexico.

This would suggest that if you contract it, there is 0.5% chance of you dying from it. Given that most of the deaths are in Mexico, prior to the world being aware of the situation and putting in interventions, the death rate will in all likelyhood be reduced elsewhere in the world, in particular in the UK.

There are quite a few but to be honest all tend to end up at the same conclusion.......nobody knows. If you think about it the Isle of Wight festival would be first to go but as far as I know that is still going on this weekend ( unless they are not going to let anybody off the island....killer zombie flu hippies!).

I think that at this stage pulling all festival, sporting events, transportation ( except emergency) and closing industry would be very severe.......and far more fatal to the economy than the current threat level. Autumn however may be a different question but best not go there at the moment.

So i would say (reassuring voice) dont worry too much.
