Young and Springsteen

I was completely unaware of any of Neil Young's work before the headliner announcements and was only familiar with a few Springsteen tracks. Since i've downloaded about 20 reccomended tracks form each artist with very differing results. Sprinsteen, bar a couple of tracks- Philadelpia and Fire to be precise- sounds to these relitively educated ears like everything that was wrong with 80's music- bombastic, lacking in true sentiment and accsessable to the "straights" for want of a better term. It sounds similar to Meat Loaf and Bon Jovi to me- ok, but lacking in true substance. I have been completely blown away by Young, can hear the basis in what a lot of my favourite music has followed up in his work- Nirvana, Radiohead etc...So glad Glasto has gioven me reason to seek out and love a great artist. Proper Result. Only shame is its him and not Springsteen that clashes with Doves. Wondering what reactions those not familiar with either/or both has had in trying to get into them once they were announced? Oh and keep on rocking in the free world!

Have you listened to Springsteen pre-1983 and post-2000? I assume you have, but if not, his albums up to and including Nebraske show his true worth. From there on it got a bit bland and shiny - he became a global superstar but the albums weren't my cup of tea. Ghost Of Tom Joad was more interesting, and his last three or four have been good in parts.

He is a legend, and I'm sure his show will be fantastic.

Artistically, though, Neil Young blows him into the weeds.

Unfortunately Springsteen has got unfairly tarred with a brush that is to a certain extent of his own making, go and listen to Born to run properly and there is an album of great songwriting, yes it is 'dad rock' but in it's time it was a revolutionary sound and musically very different form the poodle rockers that were around, Springsteen's music is raw and defiant rather than merely shouty and loud.

toooldtoknowbetter is right, either side of this era you will find a much more thoughtful and deeper songsmith, unfortunately he is known for a few years in the middle of his career. To compare Springsteen to Bon Jovi is like comparing Blur to Menswear - just because they were contemporaries, doesn't mean they were equals.

Have to agree with you about Neil Young though, the man is simply one of the greatest songwriters ever to stand on this planet.

I favour Springsteen over Young.

He has several hits that are not only lyrically masterful but also full of energy. Everyone will be dancing if he breaks out into Badlands. Thunder Road is beautiful. Bruce Springsteen will be amazing to watch.
