Wilco... new album and one show in London

even then, Jeff seems to be rather cynical about some aspects of american audiences. He used to get really frustrated and angry (to the point of jumping into the audeince and shouting at them to get into it.. ), about how 'polite' english audiences are, then (I think) he got that they were more into the music. I saw his solo show in London a few years ago, and it seemed to be a kind of turning point... it was lovely...

but then he, himself, was going through persoanl things too, which seems to have calmed him down. He always seems so happy now.

My first live experience of Wilco was when they came on at Glasto on the other stage (with the old line-up), mid-afternoon, gloriously sunny day, bacardi breezers to the fore, and he walked on stage and said something like "ok you motherf**kers....", then proceeded to give one of the best performances of that weekend... I was sold!

its all about the band that plays there as to weather its actually seated

the 2 times ive been (Doves for the Heavenly Records bash and Massive Attack for meltdown) it must have taken all of 2 bars for the entire crowd to stand up and boogie.

and acoustically, its 2nd only to RAH in my experience. stunning venue for gigs!

edit: plus, the proximity of the tattershall arms is big bonus. pre gig drink on the boat is always nice

BTW about the RFH - im a huge fan of how "retro" the whole place is. Not just the actual auditorium itself which is also angular and uncomprimising in a way... but also the building itself and all its foyers... mega fresh place.

Was only chatting to The Nal the other night about the lack of a 2500-3000 seat arena in Dublin. We have one of the most atmospheric venues around (The Olympia Theatre) and one of the most technically accomplished (Vicar St) but both hold around 1500 people at a squeeze. Bands like Wilco have to play them a couple times instead of being able to move to a RFH sized place before you make the jump to the new Point which holds 15K at a squeeze.

You Londoners really should cherish it. Its a world class venue.

Went for a stroll at the weekend along the south bank just last weekend, it's come on a lot in the last ten years or so, The Tate, Globe, various stalls and bars etc... and yes, the Tattershall Arms is a great place for a drink..

Are you sure about the Festival Hall sometimes not having seats? I know the Albert Hall does, but I've never know the Festival Hall do the same. I'm not sure if it can facilitate non-seating shows....?

I've seen some fantastic shows at the Festival Hall... Brian Wilson, Bowie/Ziggy with Lou Reed, Jeff Beck doing a Yardbirds set with the White Stripes as his band, my daughter singing in a choir (lovely )....

I saw the Dead a couple of times when they played Ally Pally in '74 (I think). I was working at a magazine called Zigzag (postboy, teaboy, general dogsbody... one of the best jobs I ever had! ), and the editor at the time was Andy Childs, who'd previously run his own Dead fanzine called Dark Star.

One of my first 'jobs' at the place was to convince him how good The Who were, so after seeing them at Charlton (and being blown away by them) he put Pete Townshend on the cover. To reciprocate, he took me to see The Dead, twice.

The first night we went backstage and Andy goes "look there's Phil", pointing to Phil Lesh, asleep on a bench. Now I've never been that much of a fan, I liked Workingmans Dead, but that wasn't very representative of what they were like live. I was kind of impressed, but not exactly blown away. They had an amazing PA system, which consisted of a wall of speakers, higher and wider than the stage itself, and set up behind the band ( ). The thinking behind it was they could do without a stage monitor system, as they were in front of the pa system... I think it caused more problems than it solved. It certainly looked impressive. The next night I went with another friend, and we both took some acid... needless to say, they were amazing!

I don't listen to the Grateful Dead that much... I think it's something to do with their voices...
