One thing to bear in mind - if you're driving down Wednesday Morning, try to work out what roads you'll be on and when..

In particular, try to avoid the motorways around Birmingham during rush hour, I've been stuck in that mess before and it's not fun.

We will be setting off early wednesday probably about 4am/5am with an aim to get there for 9am. We are going from Sheffield which is about 200 miles away i think. hopefully by getting there at 9 we can get in easily and avoid the queues later in the day but also miss the queue of people waiting to get in at 8.

Aren't the car parks numbered/lettered/colour coded like at the airport? I sometimes lose my car at sainsbury's, so am thinking maybe I should attach a flag to the aerial or something!

Don't worry Sowfpig you'll be fine - I would leave mega early like Ivan, the roads are so much clearer it's like another universe. You can always park up nearby and have a coffee or something, but being caught in rush hour traffic sucks big ones.

I'll be driving down from Sheffield, and I'm currently planning on setting off early-ish, about 5am.

And in terms of route, google maps is sending me across to enter via the red route, and having changed the directions to enter via the blue route, it adds a lot to the total journey time! But I think I will definitely be going for blue route, because driving back on Monday is going to be hassle enough, so want to make life easier on myself!

Personally , anyone driving from Yorkshire , I would use one two routes

1 - Get off M1 at Northampton , then head for Oxford then Swindon then Devizes then Glastonbury

2 - Get off M1 at Leicester then M69 to Coventry Airport then head thru Cotswolds to Swindon then

Glastonbury

Hope this helps !

Arriving at the car park between 8 & 9 is perfect. Don't be any earleir as you won't get in and you can't wait in the narrow road.

I'd say these were good shouts for routes, having driven down from Leeds to both Oxford & Bristol many a time its a really easy drive if you stay away from Birmingham, once you leave the M1 there are some awsome roads through the country to get you in the mood in live on a farm for 5 days!

  • 3 weeks later...

I set off from Barnsley at 9AM in 2007, got there around 1PM, not too much trouble getting a camp spot.

Last year set off from somewhere else (similar distance), at 6, got in at 11.

This year booked a travel lodge for tuesday night near by. The hassle of rushing to get down is gone then, can get up when I want, have someone cook me breakfast then a leisurely drive to the site.

Yeh go for it - driving there is so much better than the train palava! Don't worry too much about exact timings or directions, as diversions are likely - just follow others with Glasto stickers when you get near enough. Plus, car parks - they're pretty easy and there's always a billion oxfam stewards, either really miserable or totally hyper, to direct you in and around whether you like it or not.

Enjoy! x

What happened to being green? :lol

Or are people just hippies for the five days at Glastonbury?

The coach/train services to the site are fantastic, quick and reliable. Don't write them off too quick in favour of the car. Buses get priority coming into the site so less likely to be stuck in a queue for hours arriving/leaving.

But driving to festies is great fun.
