Go to any sports stadium in the US and they play it. Like he’s never been guilty of anything. Oh the signs were there. Coming on at Finsbury Park with a Union Jack etc. Having a massive hissy fit when the NME called him a racist. I’m conflicted. Unusually I prefer his solo stuff to his Smiths stuff. Your Arsenal is one of my favourite albums (though at least I’ve got a copy on vinyl, so my decision to play it won’t affect his royalties). I try to have the stance of what person they are shouldn’t affect the work they do (and vice versa), but that obviously becomes a lot harder with the Glitters and Watkins of the world.

Encapsulates my feelings on it pretty well. He’s left an indelible positive mark on shaping the music tastes of this country which you can’t take away. However, even his substantiated actions make him at best creepy, at worst predatory. One doesn’t cancel out the other, but should we be lionising him in this day and age? I don’t think so. It should be changed because it’s the right thing to do, not because it’s what the Hate Mail wants. Lord knows they’ll find another stick to beat this festival with even if it is changed.

I mean it really should be. The lyric on the stage was at best tone deaf. What would you call it instead though? The North West Tent? I don’t think the new bands tent works anymore (frankly that’s more Williams Green these days)
