Campsite Recipes

In anticipation of the price of a good quality hot meal costing > £7 this year (plus extras) I am planning to do more cooking outside my tent. Does anyone have any unusual or innovative recipes apart from the usual frying and bbq-ing? I have a simple one ring camping stove so anything involving a single cooking pot would be ideal. I'm thinking of cooking meatballs with chilli sauce the night before (Jamie Oliver's America) and reheating it on the first day but thereafter I'm open to suggestions.

Also, has anyone tried one of those 'Look What We've Found' readymeals in Tesco?

Make Bolognese then freeze it, put in bags then in a cool box (with some tins of booze!). Take to Glasto It will defrost over a couple of days, chuck in pan, eat. Winner.

It always astounds me that some people are quite happy to pay £205 for a Glasto ticket (plus equipment/travel/ale/narcotics etc) then balk at spending £6/7 on a meal. And then they want to waste hours sat by their tent cooking up some gruel therefore missing the bands / acts that they have paid £205 for the privilege of seeing.

With all the great food at glasto already and so little time its ridiculous to spend time cooking there. If you really must insist on wasting a really good bit of the festival and taking your own food then don't pretend to flower it up and pretend to be the roca brothers just take crisps and kitkats

Anything dried, like pasta noodles, etc. I also like the 'big soups' they are really filling. Pot noodles, light to carry - super noodles etc.

I also did fajitas one night at Glastonbury, all one pot and a packet of tortillas, we have a grill too (cheating as have a two ring cooker with grill underneath, and close to parking camping) and I did a big plate of nachos as well, with a packet of pre grated cheese, and a pot of salsa! xx

I think the OP should really be able to decide how they spend their time and its not really anyone else's business to criticise them for a) wanting to save a bit of cash, and B) cook something to eat. It seems perfectly reasonable to me!

I think you can get some very nice packaged food! Why not have a nose around Tescos and have a Pre Glasto tasting session!

Of course I do. Own beer for by the tent, stone circle, watching headliners etc. Rest of the time I drink cold beer / cider bought on site, especially real ale at Cockmills, Acoustic Field and Bimble Inn type places!

I see it like this : Glasto is 20 days every 5 years (assuming you get a ticket) - Make the most of it!

It's not pessimistic, tips were asked for and my tip is if you don't want to spend money on food then don't , just don't wase time cooking it. Just eat crisps, pre packed sandwiches from m and s or something, I think it's pessimistic to consider spending time at round your tent cooking when you could get anally fingered by a man claiming to be a wizard, or watching Rita ora

The beer analogy doesn't work as previously stated. Opening drinking a can isn't the same as cooking a meal then washing up

We're gonna have some camping type food this year too cos just can't afford to eat 3 meals out for 4 of us this year and cos we've never taken any cooking stuff before and this year we're in the CV. Thinking cereal and those croissant type things that are in individual packets for breakfast then either lunch of tea out and about, and one meal back at the CV having a bit of chill time. Not sure what yet though but thinking along the lines of those packets of rice like mexican rice spruced up with nachos and salsa one time, then a risotto packet one night with some other gubbins. guess it depends if you can carry it all from car to camping (and can be bothered - we never could when we were camping). We've always just eaten from stalls before but there's now 4 of us to feed it all adds up. thinking big massive flapjacks for snacks.

Well that's just the same in principle isn't it, you take your own beer so why not take your own food, if you want a beer then you have the option to have one of your own or go to a beer tent and have one there, im sure even though i will be taking food with me this year to save some money i still will have the occasional thing here and there :)
