Campervan availability?!

I found this website when I was having a look at hire prices. I have no clue if its any good as I've never used it, but it does seem to have campers avaliable Glasto week, which is unusual (or if I were being paranoid, a little worrying).

Good luck with your search. My mate takes his van each year & I often break into it whilst he's down at Arcadia because you definitely get a better nights sleep in campers.

Thank you so much to both of you!! I found a couple on the first link that seemed to have availability. Fingers crossed, I'll definitely owe you a drink!

And thanks for motor holme, but they were all booked out :( It's my own fault for being late to the game!!

Have an amazing glasto! x

If you can at all, ask to see the type of camper an you are renting ASAP. Anyone legit should have no problem showing you. Particularly this early in the season when they're unlikely to be out.

Be careful, lots of people on these forums have been burned, and anyone with availability this late should be treated cautiously. If nothing else be sure to pay with a credit card. That saved me from a big loss in 2011.

Don't use these. They're con artists. I almost took them to court last year.

They'll take your booking, let you fill in the insurance form and then hit you with a massive insurance charge a few days before booking. They wont tell you in advance - they only told me because I insisted they told me.

They put low prices then whack up the price by adding an 'insurance surcharge' right at the end.

BTW - I'm 45, zero points, driving 20 years, one accident in last 5 years but they wanted to charge me £200 extra because I was high risk.

Google them first and see the reviews dont take my word for it.

I didn't have that experience, but would also suggest you keep away from them. In my case, at least, they were really just agents for private vans. The owner gets a very small proportion of the fee paid, and you get a van that is basically ok, but with all the eccentricities of someone's personal vehicle. Loads of little things didn't quite work properly. Also, when I damaged something (by accident, and I did pay for the repair) he was obviously upset as it meant something personal to the owner, which I felt really bad about in turn. Everyone's a loser, except the agent that takes the lion's share for doing very little.

I didn't put it in earlier as you said leaving from the London area, but if you're really stuck this is who I'm using this year.

They do actually own the motorhomes that they rent, possibly with the exception of the VW's from Salop Leisure. They know I'm taking mine to Glastonbury and are OK with it. I've not used them before, but went and had a look in October and they had all their motorhomes there. One of the owners was doing a cleanup on one that had just come back, so I am quite confident in them.

The only downside is they rent Friday to Friday or Saturday to Saturday, but I'm just going to use the days on the end to travel a bit more.

Hope you find something, maybe see you in Campervan East.

Sorry - didn't mean to freak you out. Maybe just give them a call and ask to speak to the owner whose van it is. Gives you a chance to put your mind at rest that the specific van is ok - I may just have had a bad experience. Even my van wasn't so terrible - the big thing for me was feeling a bit cheated that the owner got so little of the money. If you're happy with the price, then that doesn't really effect you in practical terms. On the positive side, if the van is ok, then maybe agree a deal with the owner for next year. From memory he got around £300 out of about £800 in the end, I went back to camping, but the owner was up for doing a direct deal when he found out how much I was paying the agent.

Motorholme aren't really the problem I suspect, as someone mentioned they are just an agent for people letting their own private motor homes. My mate lets his through Motoholmes and he's had far more aggro from the renters than the other way round.

It's not for rent for Glasto though as we're using it ourselves! (plus, last time it went, it came back battle scarred, which pissed him off no end)

I'm booked via www.camperbug.co.uk

It takes a sizable chunk...approx £70 on top of what the owner wants to charge. More frustrating was the owner had a website, it just hadn't come up in the first few search pages. Best thing is the owner is just up the road from me.

Abacus have a hire place in Andover on route to Glastonbury down the A303. But they wanted silly money, well over £1000. Apparently Glastonbury clashes with F1 at Silverstone hence shortage of cheaper hire this year.

Sorry for bumping this - but further advice required. After me getting proper panicked about using motorholme after comments above I've managed to get an offer of another motor home. Trouble is - its a bit of a whopper for 7 people (theres a bunch of us) and comes in at 27 feet (or just over 8 metres).

Looking at the web site it says over 8 metres needs a second ticket (we only have one so far in Campervan West - which I think is sold out now).

Can I get some advice on:

  • Does size matter? In this case - I mean do they check size of the campervan? We might also want to out up a small tend at the back of the van if at all possible.
  • Do I need a special driving license for this?
  • How difficult are they to drive ( I only have a standard driving license).

Apologies for perhaps asking the bleeding obvious. Trust the advice on here (aside from the weeing in a field thread) more than other places.

Regarding the licence, I don't think the actual dimensions are too much of an issue, just the weight. You can drive up to 8 people with a vehicle weighing up to 3500kgs. Anything over 3500kgs will need a C1 licence.

You'll have to look up the model of the van to check the weight.

I'd probably risk taking the van as is with one ticket if it's only 10cm too long. I think you would be chancing it to put any additional tents up as that would probably draw attention to you more.

We stressed about this the first year we went and bought two tickets. There was no need and we certainly didn't get extra space from having 2 tickets.

Every year since for marginal calls like this we haven't bothered so sure you will be fine
