Five is hard, but, and in no particular order, the awards go to...

White Denim - the "So Much Better Than On Record" award

Megafaun - the "Surprise Discovery" award

Josh T Pearson - the "How Did I Enjoy That So Much?" award

Bo Ningen - the "Forty Five Minute Grin" award

The Fall - the "Everything You Know Is Wrong" award

Lots acts delivered what was expected of them but these five for me did that bit more for me.

Having said that, unlike previous years, for me there were no total festival stealers of the likes of Wolf People, London Snorkelling Team, Efterklang or (look away Ben) Joe Gideon and the Shark.

Midlake - might yet learn to love "Courage of Others" as much as "Van Occupanther"

Okkervil River - last 20 minutes was euphoric, liked the drunk dancing (sorry folks)

Lykke Li - our family favourites ! apparently Get Some is very rude

Wooden Shjips - mesmerising while I could cope with the noise - best record I heard in the Rough Tradev shop

Unthanks - great emotional songs and tap dancing

Had to leave 2 songs into John G but with enhanced band bet it was great

John Grant (definitive #1)

Joanna Newsom

Beirut

Woods

The Leisure Society

That was really hard. The only reason Okkervil River are not in the top 5 is that they were probably my favourite band of EOTR 2009 so I had really high expectations going in, plus a few people in the crowd around me spoiled it a bit. Still an excellent set though, and of course, there are many other bands I wish I could easily swap into that top 5.

1. Doug Paisley in the Tipi and getting Megafaun on stage

2. Dan Mangan's Robots of course

3. The double header of Megafaun and Woods on the Garden Stage in the sunshine

4. Didn't think Beirut would be as great as that!

5. Sam Amidon's banjo and banter in the Tipi

Almost an impossible task...there were so many outstanding bands but here goes in no order:

1. Okkervil River (they just rocked the arse off the Garden Stage)

2. John Grant (what a voice!)

3. Lanterns On The Lake (Just hit every button for me...new find of the weekend)

4. Dry The River (High expectations and they delivered)

5. Allo Darlin (The party set of EOTR and that marriage proposal bit was bliss)

Got to mention Bo Ningen for the most mental "OMG this is so loud it physically hurts" tag!

I did a Top 5 the moment I stepped through the door on Monday....

1. The Walkmen - Apart from the mike problems, flawless. Loved the toned down version of "The Rat", but "In the New Year" was stunning.

2. Mogwai - It had been 15 years since I'd last seen Mogwai, and worth the wait....New Paths to Helicon was simply stunning.

3. Wild Nothing - Had seen them at Green Man and this was better, and 15 minutes longer too. Just lovely stuff.

4. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - was worried that they'd suck, but the new songs sounded great and Alec's voice has improved. The Gordon Gano moment was awesome.

5. Darren Hanlon - had only heard a couple of songs before, but exceeded all expectations and was a great closer (went back to tent and heard bits of JN).

Okkervil River

Allo Darlin

Bo Ningen

Laura Marling

Dan Mangan

Disturbingly, in a way, the only first-time-seen was Dan the Mang. John Grant might have nudged out Bo Ningen if he hadn't played pretty much the same set that I saw at Green Man a year ago and the Sage 6 months ago. Time to take a break from touring and get some new songs written, Mr Grant.

Apart from #1, no particular order

1 - John Grant - wow, just wow! Well worth 45min wait in the rain to be at the centre of the barrier!

Other Lives - thanks for the tip-off Ben :)

Okkervil River - Glad I chose them over Mogwai, they "rocked the arse off the Garden Stage" to quote the OH

Allo Darlin - immense fun, and the solo was beautiful

Dry the River - expected them to be great + they were

In no particular order, and I really don't know how to count:

Allo Darlin' - wonderful in how they communicate with the audience with their charming indie sounds

The Fall - always the same, always different

John Grant - simply the voice

Daniel Lefkowitz - never the same, always different

Lykke Li - the combination of sound and visuals really surprised me, very unlike her nice pop albums

Josh T Pearson - So sad and so far out in his in-between-song jokes

M Ward - what a beautiful show

    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
