I'm not sure the Pumpkins would be a worthy headliner actually. With FNM, all the people who desperately wanted and had money to burn got to see them (DL didn't sell out for a long while), but they barely did any dates. In contrast, the Pumpkins have done several tours, with lots of venues having not sold out, and disappointed a fair number of people. In addition, the Pumpkins is Billy + supporting cast rather than with many original members, which will lose a lot. Not as much as Queen, but probably comparable to GnR.

I saw both of them twice on their reunion tours, and I would make a fair amount of effort to see FNM again, while the Pumpkins would just be vaguely interesting. And in terms of albums I'm more of a Pumpkins fan.

Yeah I saw Pumpkins at Reading 07 and FNM at Reading 09 and Edinburgh a few days before that. I would say FNM were definately the better band live (although Pumpkins def had a better stage show) but after seeing Pumpkins on their album preview tour last year they were definately catching up to FNM and that was without knowing the majority of the set.

I never seen the Smashing Punkins before but I would like to though because I heard a few songs and they sound awesome.

I do agree with you that Faith No More are a more exciting prospect than Smashing Pumpkins. However, both times I have seen the Smashing Pumpkins they have been awesome (four years between each gig). I reckon once I know the new album next time I see them they will be even better, and that album should be out by Sonisphere. I also think if they did headline Sonisphere they would add a heavier edge to the headliners.. their new stuff sounds loud as hell and when I saw them last they stuck to alot of the heavy rock stuff (Geek USA etc).

Hmm...Def Leppard tour to be announced soon maybe they really are stuck for headliners.

It's a US tour, and there's leaked dates around Soni weekend, so rules them out...unfortunately

As did the 4,000 or so people watching them. The crowd was pathetic. I know cos I walked past it on the way to the 3rd stage. Didn't even reach the tower.

4000? There were a lot more than 4000.... and the crowd doesn't concern me, I thought they were great.

not a lot more than 4000, certainly no more than 5000. and whilst the crowd might not concern you, the fact that 55,000 people decide to watch something else should be an indicator of what a crap booking def leppard were only 2 years after their last appearance.

Def Leppard was a bit silly booking twice in 3 years to headline but that said, i enjoyed them, but then i wasn't there in 2009 to see them 1st time.

I watched a bit of Def Leppard last year and I saw their set in 2009.

2009 they were dire, boring, didn't get the crowd going at all and couldn't live up to Whitesnake who were before them.

Last year they had a great stage set up, sound was loud, they started with the new song undefeated and from what I saw they were a million times better than in 2009.

That being said though I did go watch Pendulum, cus I like them, they were on form too, really stepped up their performance IMO.
