Self-Interest

The much maligned term self-interest seems to be used negatively on these boards. But there is an assumption here, in that the self cannot be interested in the social, sacrificial and altruistic aspects of life.

Surely sacrifice is an inherent part of our self-interest when we have families and help our friends.

I don't think you can ever get past self interest. You might do things for others, but ultimately it's because your own responses inform you that it's the right thing to do. So you give yourself positive feedback.

If it felt really bad to do something, you wouldn't do it, would you? At some level, you'd have to be getting self gratification out of it.

Which is included in being sacrificial. Dying so that your child may live and for a cause to be furthered is to benefit the self-interest of a devoted father or revolutionary.

I did explain that in the original post.
