Bestival 2011

Better than Prince? Not sure that's possible, unless it's Bowie. Hope it's not RHCP, unless it's the early 90s model that turns up (and not the incredibly boring band they've become) if so. Another name that occurred to me (which will probably induce horror in many of you) - Tom Jones?

More to the point, he also personally said on the forums that there was no chance The Darkness would ever headline his festival.

As for Red Hot Chilli Peppers - I would absolutely f**king hate that. They're an awful band.

Just a little bit of a change in topic but as a word of whats possibly to come: The Cure played a 44 song set last night in Sydney, playing their first 3 albums in order and then 3 sets of encores full of B-Sides. We won't be getting this but we may be getting some of those songs.

Prince and Red Hot Chilli Peppers can't really be compared to one another in terms of musical output because they both make different styles of music - the difference being that RHCP stay pretty much the same and never really evolve (except for the worst) whereas Prince has never ceased in his creatvity and diversity, of not just his own songs but in being able to write songs for other artists. In fact, Prince is probably the most relentlessly creative, brilliant and ambitious song writer to have lived in the last 30 years and has pushed more boundaries in pop music songcraft with his single-minded, independent vision of how his music should sound more than RHCP could only envision in their wildest dreams. People may not 'get' him but the facts speaks for themselves and he's one of the most widely respected men in modern music.

Chillis are just mediocre now, and self-indulgent. They may have been good back in the 90s for a couple of years but then so were The Spice Girls and we all know how shit they were.

Well, on the official forums a few people have been debating the budget of the festival. Now it's all fine and great us making suggestions (like Prince, Elton John, RHCP etc) but realistically, you look at the line-up as it stands and bearing in mind Bestival is still a growing festival both in reputation and prestige - doesn't even have an eFestivals page - the budget will be tight as a drum, so the chances are they won't go mental when they already have some huge bands booked.

If the ticket prices and audience size is roughly the same as last year's, take a look at last year's line-up and compare to some of the hopefuls we're suggesting - it's not realistic. With PiL, I'm pretty much running out of ideas and scraping the barrel for ideas on who it could be but if I were an organiser of a modestly successful festival, I'd use my modest budget to get a modestly successful band.

Is John Lydon a rock star, pop star and diva? I think so, yeah. Would they be considered a "different" band? Very much so. Fits the criteria for me.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
