Is 10.5kg as heavy as it sounds... ?

I decided to go with a normal tent rather than a popup one and ordered a vango 350 beta today, it cost me £65 including postage.

I'm a bit split on the pop up thing.

If I'm solo camping or camping not too far from the car then I have a 2 man Quecha pop-up which is a piece of piss to use/carry and once you've got the technique sorted then you can get it down and packed in under a minute.

That said, for a bigger tent they are bloody awkward. I had a play with one in Decathlon that was a 4 man and even the shop staff couldn't get the f**ker down. Once packed it was a cumbersome thing to carry and pretty heavy. My Coleman 4 man dome tent is much better, packs small and I can get it up in 10-15 minutes on my own, less with help.

So if you want a 2 man then I'd recommend the pop-up, any bigger I don't think the concept works.

My tent arrived this morning and seeing as I had the day off I have pitched it. It was pretty straight forward to pitch by myself, the tent seems sturdy and overall it's big. The porch which has an integral groundsheet is about as big as the sleeping area, the sleeping area would fit three people in but you wouldn't get much kit in besides the people.

The retailer seems fine, ordered on Sunday delivered on Wednesday so I would recommend taking a look at their site. Any other questions about the tent feel free to ask.

Over the last few years I have consciously looked to reduce size/weight of what I take.

Mattress has become one of those slim inflatable ones, which is ace, and far lighter than any lilos or other types.

Slleping bag had got slimmer and lighter, but is still a springweight TOG just in case (even last year was a bit chilly at 2am).

Last year I got a Vango Dart DS 300 (3 man) - works for me and a 60 litre rucksack..

It's not overly big when packed, was easy to carry, I just slung it onto my rucksack with a strap. And it was really pretty simple to take down and fold - about three minutes...

About £50 I think

i use an aztec esquina 2man. i go by the ethic travel light travel fast. its a mountaineering tent so its very light with alloy poles (under 3kg), i also use it for motorcycle rallies (travel light travel fast) an having a supermoto means v.little space. has compression straps on the bag so it packs up very small. 2 man is big enough for one + leathers and clothing etc. all in all i can deffinatly recommend it

an being bright orange means its dead easy to find at night pissed as a newt on tetleys an SoCo

its up to you as to which you get, a pop up tent(quechua are very good or any pop up tent really)which are really light however they can be hard to put back into the bag and can be annoying and frustrating to carry.... or you could go for a standard tent that you have to put poles in,, these can be more reliable sometimes but will obviously take longer to put up, it is much heavier because of the poles and the poles could break easier.. i have been to Glastonbury for the last 2 years and i have got both a pop up and a standard tent,,i got my peakland pop up tent last year at a tent show near my house but i have hardly used it because it is so hard to put away and me and my dad can easily put up the normal tent in a few minutes.. if you do go for a standard tent then just get a cheap one from somewhere like argos or if you go for a pop up tent test putting it away a few times in your back garden before going to the festival hope this helps

It makes sense to practice putting up any tent before you go. If it's new to make sure you know how to do it and if it's one from previous years to check that you've still got all the bits and that nothing is broken/needs repairing. Also remember to make sure that you've got enough pegs and that any bent ones are straightened out. And don't forget a hammer. I prefer a claw hammer to a mallet as it's also good for taking pegs out at the end.

I appreciate that it depends on how you are getting to Glasto. Bus or train can limit tent size but if you are taking a car/sharing a van/minibus then I'd recommend a decent sized tent even if you have to construct a trolley to get it onto site. A small tent or a pop up is fine for a couple of nights but with nearly a week I'd opt for size and comfort - particularly a central communal area you can stand in. If several of you share a big tent it won't take up any more space than a cluster of small tents - and it's more sociable.

It's also worth spending a bit of time to make sure that it's well put up and securely pegged down. There's nothing worse than discovering it lets the rain in or starts to shift at night in a storm.
