Indie Bands

Went to see The Cribs this year on the other stage and though it was a great show. I seem to recall one of the Jarmans having a bit of a moan between songs about the lack of decent indie and the predominance of electropop style acts.

Just wanted to see peoples opinions and if the traditional indie boys with guitars is out of favour at the minute or just a lack of strong bands in that genre?

I'm probably gonna be slated for saying this but I think that the majority of bands who are around at the moment have only picked up guitars to make money and the reason why so many bands have crossed over to electronic music ala Editors, Bloc Party etc. is because it's the in thing to do at the moment. I'm not complaining about those bands though because some of their songs are relitavely catchy but it just doesn't do anything for me personaly and it all sounds a bit samey really.

I think there needs to be a proper rock band again with real catchy melodies, controversy and to give these bands a real kick up the backside. At the moment I'm really obsessed with this idea and I am trying (and failing miserably) to start a band of my own but It'll probably get me nowhere and I'll probably end up breaking it up by the end of next year cos of uni and shit so I'm hoping to be in a reltavely successfull band by the end of uni.

You probably all think I'm mental now. :P

I agree completely here, modern 'indie' music as it were, has been in decline for a while, I'm really not a fan of this electronic sound.

However, it's refreshing to see bands like Mumford and Bombay taking it back to real instruments. I'll probably get slated, but I'm also so so so excited for the return of The Libertines, ok they wern't revolutionary as people make out, but they played proper garage rock, wrote songs many could relate to and personally (and many people my age I would guess) played a big part in as we were growing up.

So I think if they do stay around after Reading, and with the Strokes returning and releasing a new album music could (and hopefully will) pick back up!

Thanks! was hoping someone would come in with some good band recommendations to check out. I am mainly a fan of electronic/dance music but would love to see a decent indie type band come through and mix things up a bit. Who from that list would you say has potential to crossover and move up a few notches on the bill?

Do Foals not count as Indie anymore? I thought their set was amazing.

I also saw Two Door Cinema Club who I thought were good.

Missed Broken Bells who are pretty rocky but I'm not sure what the term indie means anymore. Is it purely jangly, checked shirt young lads? Back in MY day, indie meant Indie label and there was a whole chart set up for them. But that also meant that the Mute label was part of that scene which meant bands such as Depeche and Erasure, and all the experimental electro bands of the early 80's were classed as indie. What is called indie now was tagged alternative then. Smiths, Cure, Wedding Present etc even up to The Stone Roses in the late 80's.

As I'm VERY old now someone will have to fill me in on whether it's an actual genre now and what it includes. I saw Broken Social Scene mentioned earlier and I wouldn't have classed them as Indie. And if Gomez is included then bands such as Arcade Fire would be in there which I don't think could be classed as Indie (although not sure what they would be classed as). Is just plain 'Rock' now just classed as the heavier side of music? Because that's what a lot of bands are doing yet you wouldn't see them at Download.

I got in a lot of arguments with friends when I said This Charming Man is THE perfect pop song. I still think it is despite their arguments. They insisted it was rock. But again, another era

Help an Old man out? I'd ask my 18 and 21 year old kids but theyre still not home yet!

Confused from Manchester
