The only defence is to plead self defence (or defence of another if you are sharing your sleeping bag) in this case, and assuming they didn't hit you first you can refer to R v Bird, which basically says you don't have to have been hit first to claim self defence if you are acting immediately to a credible threat to your person.

And at the risk of sounding crap, like manz said already blud yergetme, tent theives will usually be out in teams so any acts of heroism will often be met by horrific multiple opponent assault. This is why I will stab them in their throat so they can't scream "KEVVVVVVVVVVVVVV"*

I've got a 9 man tent that we share, not had any issues with it on a few festivals, I'm assuming the thieves aren't interested due to the higher likelyhood of someone being there awake, although generally it's in such a mess that you can lose whole people under all the crap never mind wherever I've left my wallet.

We had our tent robbed last year and I'm quite nervous about it happening again this year.

I always, always sleep with any valuables (camera, phone, wallet) in my sleeping bag but me and my husband got spectacularly drunk on thursday last year and i didn't hide my stuff. I know my wallet was tucked under my mattress by my head but no idea where my camera was.

They went through all the stuff in the porch and then came in the bedroom bit and went through all our clothes and my bag. They got my wallet and camera. Luckily we had split our cash.

The worst bit is the thought of someone being that close to us and sleeping through it. : (

I did get my wallet back a couple of weeks later still with debit card and driving licence and then in october got my camera back too!!

totally sucks that there are groups of people who go with the sole purpose of stealing others belongings from their tents while they're out enjoying themselves/sleeping

hopefully this year, we can hope none of those types managed to get a ticket!! :)

Not ever had a problem myself, but last year a mate had a box of wine stolen from their tent, not while they were in it thankfully!

It's right that most the thieving scum work in gangs, not wanting to make us all paranoid, but I know there have been cases in the past where security have been in on it too :(

I've never had a problem.... last year two girls tried getting into our tent but that was a genuine mistake. We heard them outside discussing it and one was saying "I don't think its this one" and the other was insistent that it was. Then despite us telling them "its not this one" the insistent girl still tried getting in.... laugh.gif

Although a slight hassle, the times I've no camped with crew, I've just put everything back in my rucksack and left it in the lock-up. That way, there's nothing to worry about. I take a small rucksack which I can stick a few clothes in and my sleeping bag, pick that up when finished partying and take back to tent. I realise this isn't always possible if you have loads of beer etc, but found it works for me. I've ordered a SIM card yesterday which I'm going to stick in a old phone for the weekend to avoid bringing iphone.

Saying that, on the Tues night of 98 some bugger nicked our pegs! we also had a 'sorry, wrong tent' which was a poor excuse as there were only a few tents in our area. Still, it is a worry but if we're all vigilant let's hope we can minimise it as much as poss.

i see a few people saying they got thier lager stolen. Cant do much about the boxes of wine but on the lager side of things...just make sure all the cans are seperate and uve left no bags lying about...they cant be arse to start looking for bags they are only interested in carrying crates off. so seperate cans it a chore for them!

The dead can't lie.

My rucksack got stolen last year along with a few cans of ale. It was Monday afternoon so it could feasibly have been abandoned, but getting all my stuff back to the car in a bin bag wasn't fun.

I've been that guy trying to get in the wrong tent so I know how easy it is. Luckily it was the tent next to mine at Cambridge last year, so I could at least apologise to the bloke in the morning. He was very good about it, but I wouldn't have blamed him for smack in the face.

Lock-ups!

If there's no large sums of cash or expensive phones/mp3 players to grab easily first two nights they'll move on to other festivals where there are no free Lock-ups!

I must just add Lock-ups once more for anyone that doesn't understand that if you live in a tent any valuables you're carrying are extremely vulnerable.

Had this at Leeds last year - crap ending to the summer really. Thankfully I woke up to someone in our porch and screamed which woke my fella up who went after them ( in socks, v attractive lol!) it has crossed my mind that it could happen again & will be more vigilent. I'll be taking some clip on purse bells that the local crime prevention panel gave out at Xmas to give us a heads up of anyone fiddling the zip. Other than that I tend to keep everything in my backpack & use it as a pillow and loop my arm through it too for added security.

    • A mixed first day for us. First of all, we were honestly quite shocked that there was no security check at all at the VIP entrance around 7:30 PM. No bag check, nothing. I’ve attended Primavera many times over the years and this felt surprisingly lax for an event of this size. Did anyone else experience the same?   Another disappointment was the communication regarding the weather situation. Primavera has some of the best sound systems and speaker setups in the festival world, yet somehow they were not able to make a single clear announcement explaining what was happening. Instead, people were expected to read tiny messages on screens in Mordor while thousands were left wondering what was going on. A simple and direct audio announcement would have gone a long way.   On a lighter note, this guy absolutely made my day. Sitting right in front of the Estrella Damm terrace, wearing nothing but a long-sleeve shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse All Stars, he remained completely unbothered by the rain. While everyone else was looking for shelter, he sat there wearing sunglasses, calmly watching the crowd as if he was watching a movie.   Absolute main character energy!
    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
