Think it was all running quite late too.

it was. The act who were on before ICU - I forget who they were - were absolutely brilliant. As far as I'm remembering now they were the first act I saw all weekend and the best act I saw all weekend.

So I really should find out who they were.

Anyone missing it hard this week?

Yup. :(

This time last year I was already parked up in the campervan fields.

The band before Nik Turner was The Gentle Mystics:

Is that who you mean?

Just looked at the offical lineup again and it has Nik Turner's Inner City Unit Thursday slot at The Hub down as Nik Turner's 40th Anniversary Space Ritual - so no wonder I and others were confused.

yep, that looks like them. Ta. :)

hmmm, that's hardly the same Space Ritual that was playing other places at around the same time.

As it happens I went and saw Nik the same year on one of the other nights (I think the Friday night) inside the main tent/stage thing (forget what it's called) at Shangri-La, so can report that wasn't an ICU set either (tho I didn't stay past the first 5 or so songs).

Isn't WtGG originally an ICU track? Punkadelic?

ummmm .... I' ve had two ICU albums (don't think I still have, they were on tape), and I think one of them was Punkadelic - wasn't that the one with 'Bones of Elvis' on? If so, I can't remember WtGG being on that.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure. But I defo used to have a vinyl 12" of WtGG and that was by Hawkwind.

Ha! It was on ICU's Pass Out from 1980. :D

And again on 1982's Punkadelic.

yep, just found it. Mind you, to me, that tracklisting reads more like a Hawkwind track listing.

I'm very Hawkwind unfamiliar, so might it have been him carrying Hawkwind tracks into ICU? Or did it happen the other way around? (or both?).

Could be both. I think Nik just plays any songs he's written or contributed to whichever band he's in.

just had a look at various discograhies, and I can't find the 12" I had listed anywhere, so I don't think they're fully complete - and while now off the back of this discussion I'm not sure what name it might have been released under (I thought Hawkwind), I can't find it under Nik or ICU either, and it would have only been from one of those three.

Bones of Elvis was on maximum effect and WTGG was on passout

WtGG was on Punkadelic too, I found out when looking. It was Maximum Effect and Punkadelic that I had.

mate of mine was on holiday between jobs when he bumped in to Nik and ended up being a roadie for him. One night was asked on stage to sing Bones of Elvis. Made his life and he still dines out on that one

More of that set here.

Anyone know whether he's playing this year as I haven't seen him on the lineup?

My other sets from Glastonbury 2011 here (some still to be uploaded in the next couple of weeks):

edit: no idea why the link broke?

edit 2: Then it works again for no reason... Damn Flickr!

edit 3: Embedded photos instead as link provided by Flickr is simply too flaky.

Great news! Still haven't seen him on the line up and don't know what stage he'll be on, but just got an email from Nik saying that he'll be playing a set on Sunday afternoon at around 3pm to 4pm. I'm trying to find out which stage and will post it here when I do.

    • Personally, I do hope Fontaines headline next year. Feels like it's their time in terms of the contemporary element - I know 2028 could equally be but I think (and speaking as an old git) they are probably the most significant band to emerge for a good few years, and they've already accumulated 4 great albums, let alone adding 5th, to field a memorable setlist.

    • Alright fair, I thought she only did BST once. Though I do question how that type of pop show will translate to a stadium.
    • yeah, but I enjoy moaning about them too much so whatever I guess.   and besides... a few years from now there will be absolutely nothing on TV except for Coben based shows so I'd best get used to it...   🙂        (for anyone who has ever read a Coben book - are the books as utterly sh*t as the tv shows???)
    • Those in the Glastonbury ‘Tour’ thread buying tickets noticed it when tickets first went on sale.   And if you look at the blocks still on sale here https://www.axs.com/uk/events/1489025/muse-tickets?skin=theo2 blocks 410-414 definitely stand out as the only seating areas without tickets available, so appears that they still haven’t gone on sale.
