Hello People,

Has anyone on here travelled by train to the Festival. We normally get a van each year but they are getting a bit expensive so checked trains and looking a cheaper option...

Just wanted to know if its a pain in the arse? whats it like once you get to the local train station to get to the festival (Will be heading from North East to Castle Cary via London) and what is it like for been searched at stations/shuttle buses etc

I travelled by train a few years ago. I didn't get searched and would echo what ukslim said about the herding and lack of shade. It has to be done but sitting around in the boiling sun, especially AFTER the festival isn't good at all, it's bearable though, just be sure to have some water with you :P

The train journey wasn't bad at all last year :P. The main issue was the wait when we got to the station.

We were in a queue for the shuttlebus for about 6 hours. We arrived at the station at 2, and didnt get onsite at the festival until about 9 ! Was a horrible experience.

  • 2 weeks later...

had to go by train @ last minute last year. journey there was fine. problems started once we got off. 5 hour wait to get a shuttle bus in the BOILING heat, with ZERO help from stewards. then the bus dropped us off a mile from the site and told us to WALK the rest of the way!

the whole thing put me off gettin the train, coz the glasto shuttle 'service' is disgusting @ best.

Indeed, the train itself is ok, although can be a little crowded (probably won't get a seat - I was coming from Bath and didn't get one - but that's fine really), but the worst part is waiting for the bus. You think you've queued enough, then go around a corner then there's about a mile left of people waiting for a bus. It's fun when you get on said bus and in the festival, but if there's an alternative version of transport (even if it costs a little more), take it. Really.

Last year sounds exceptional - then again I didn't go.

I've been 6 times, always on the train, and I'm going, by train again, this year. Never had to wait at Castle Cary more than 20 minutes or so and there are usually buses waiting for the trains.

Before 2000 the bus stop was over a mile from the Festival so you had to walk down a leafy lane once you'd got off the bus - downhill too, creating quite a challenge on the way back. Then again, security checks were almost non-existant in those days and you felt a bit of a fraud if you actually had a ticket.

the shuttle bus service last year sucked, clearly not enough buses for the masses of people, then when the buses did arrive the bottom deck was loaded with peoples luggage which was fine then everyone sat on the top deck. However all of the buses were going with the top deck only a 3rd full.

    • As someone that always likes looking at this stuff, compare the BBC opening titles...     ... and the ITV ones.     Tbf the BBC intro is better than the ones they used for the last World Cup, which I thought were pretty bad and on its own, the BBC choice actually isn't too bad. It's not as good as their pinball one for the last Euros, but the concept is reasonable. But let's be real, the ITV one is better.

    • Another new one from Overmono.   Album is shaping up nicely.
    • I'm only judging by highlights but considering that I saw a lot of anxieties from US fans about them getting it wrong after several bad results in the last year or so, they very much had it on opening night. Might be as much about Paraguay being a long way from the team that beat Brazil and Argentina in qualifying though.   Canada also doing something in a World Cup other than lose and arguably be good enough to have beaten Bosnia means reasonable start. Think they might regret not winning though.
