Time off work?

Hi all.

I have been to Glastonbury now for the past 3 years, and have always gone on the Wednesday, as I had no serious commitments being a student :-). However this year I am working in a school (since sept) and as it stands at the moment will be going friday after work. So basically do you think I should pluck up the courage and ask for friday off?

Thanks in advance!

I'm in exactly the same position as you are.

I asked my boss for time off, they said no, so now I'm just going from the Friday after school and leaving after the headliners on Sunday.

Ask. All they can do is say no. I was debating pulling a sickie or putting in for time off for different reasons, but I'd be so excited I wouldn't be able to keep it quiet, and I just felt uneasy about the whole thing

:P

Thanks for your opinions. It is a dilema, it looks like I am going to need to ask, and just hope for the best. I'll wait for the best time :-).

Coming home Sunday evening after the last act is a real killer. However I do love my job and I knew when I booked the tickets this was going to happen. But I wouldn't miss the festival for the world!

Ooh don't pull a sickie. It's your job. If you can't get the time of you just have to suck it up and miss bits of it - that's the nature of working in a school. One of the reasons I didn't do a PGCE is I knew I wouldn't want a job where I couldn't go to Glasto properly. Ask for Friday off - if they say no, be ready to do one as soon as possible and head down on Friday afternoon.

Good luck!

I'd do the sniffing thing on the Wednesday, fake a cough on the Thursday, and tell them you'll see how you feel on Friday. Call in sick on the Friday, and the Monday. Make sure you get completely wasted at Glastonbury, and don't bother sleeping much on Monday.

Go back to work on Tuesday a little worse for wear, claiming you've just about recovered from the worst flu you've ever experienced.

Is worth asking. My friend & her boyfriend are both teachers at the same school & they've both been allowed to take the Friday off for it! So you might be lucky.

As much as I love Glastonbury, in my opinion it's not worth pulling a sickie & risking your job/career. I mean what if you get spotted on the tv coverage!?! :P

I'd ask around to see if anyone is able to cover your lessons on the Friday. If you can find someone to cover you, then mention this to your boss when you ask for the Friday off - shows some forward thinking on your part at least, and wont otherwise leave them in the lurch.

A crisp £50 might help.

My intentions really were not to pull a sickie. Never have and never plan to. It was to whether to ask for it off. Part of that dilema is the fact that I do get good holidays, hence concerned for the need to ask.

Sounds like I just need to ask!

I knew the holidays debate would appear! :-)

The Friday and the Monday of the Glastonbury weekend should be national Bank Holidays in my opinion. I'm serious. We are way under quota for public holidays in this country and coming at the end of June it fits perfectly between the May and August breaks. Very few voters would object to this. We should all make it an Election issue. Point it out to your local greedy bastard MP when they come knocking on your door, all smarmy and vying for your vote.

You should ask for time off but don't delay. Advance warning means the school, can plan cover in advance. My friend who is a teacher has the Friday and Monday off and in exchange works in school holidays running revision clubs, which sometimes the schools struggle to find the right staff for. Everybodys happy, except her when she runs into pupils whilst at the festival, which can happen!
