Robert Plant & Snoop Dogg

It wasn't the collabaration bit that i was laughing at, that would be great like you say! Snoop did a Johnny Cash remix recently so i wouldn't say it would be totally out there haha. It was the fact that they're both likely to be at the festival so this makes them likely to collabarate!

I said it before, and I'll keep saying it every time one of these threads pops up.

If Snoop Dog plays, I'll have to think long and hard about what Glastonbury has become.

This is a man who boasts about putting women on street corners, and beating them up if they step out of line. He suggests that listeners should aspire to a similar lifestyle. It's a disgrace.

I would say Snoop's ouvre is more than just "questionable" morals. I'd like to hear your examples of acts that advocate the sort of stuff I described. Fictional narrators in the vein of Johnny Cash or Nick Cave don't count.

He doesn't say "you must do what I do". But he says "I'm rich, I get respect, I get laid" -- and his whole schtick is to look pleased with himself. That means, "wouldn't you like to be like me?".

I take your point completely and whilst I'm not a massive afficionado of snoops music I've always looked at his attitude/image/lyrics as comedic/ironic - if he really does believe/take seriously these views then maybe I should/would change my opinion of him (to a negative one I mean) but a lot of hip-hop lyrics are IMO meant to be "tounge in cheek" I think

I see your angle, and I know there are hip hop acts who *are* tongue in cheek.

But I think there's a number of things that disqualify Snoop from that excuse: his actual membership of the Crips (in the past, and maybe still), the way he continously bigs up the Crips, his narrow escape from a murder conviction (his mate, in the same case, was not so lucky), and his porn videos (which I've seen - they're, um, not inconsistent with the ho's on corners lyrics).

But even if it was tongue in cheek - there would need to be some jokes in it. Where's the joke here:

<quote>

Nigga look what dun' happen since your bitch dun' chose

My wrist dun' froze I'll show you how I get them hoes

I'll spit that G that be f**kin with their brain

Have ‘em on a track when it's freezing in the rain

Scream on a bitch with the nerve to complain

Like bitch you dead wrong

If you catch a date you be warned

You said you want the finer things in life

You gotta go out and get it

And I'll be right here waiting when you come back with it

You see I was born to break a bitch

My instructions to make a bitch

I got me a New York Knicks, Celtics, and a Laker bitch

I got that G that make these hoes have a change of heart

I'm a natural I've been good at this from the start

</quote>

But the key thing is, even if it's fiction, it isn't presented as fiction.

Well if you go right back to when Snoop first came out, rappers wern't saying: Well I'm alright, i mean i'm not great, but i'm mediocre, quite average really. And they still aren't now. It's all (to use a word that makes me cringe) hype.

It *used* to be "I'm the best rapper ever, or ever will be". And that was obviously tongue in cheek.

Then for a bit it was "Jesus, it's rough round where we live, we're being downtrodden and we're mad as hell".

Then along came "Jesus, it's rough round where we live, but that's how I roll motherf**ker, I'm king round here"

thanks so much for that led zeppelin/snoop song - amazing!

i think maybe he isn't being serious and maybe he is. the way i see is, which isn't neccessarily the right or wrong way is that i see it as being tongue in cheek. i'm either having a good laugh at him or a good laugh with him. i certainly don't take it seriously and i hope he doesn't. thats why i enjoy it sooooo much.

don't get me wrong, i'm more of an experimental music fan. but if snoop dogg plays, it'll be the highlight of my weekend, no doubt.
