Glastonbury makes you proud to be British

Something I was thinking about the other day when I drove past Glastonbury - what an absolutely amazing achievement the festival is. How massive it is, how tiny this country is, and how dedicated we are as a nation to having a bollocks out good time.

One of the things we Brits can be truly proud of - we squeeze the most amount of pleasure out of things, and that's an art.

Rain, mud, sun, doesn't matter. Started from absolutely nothing, just an idea and a farm, and getting the biggest names in the world to come and play, and everything else besides, Circus, Kidz, comedy, everything.

Course i did - I attended. if there's no crowd, there's no festival. I did loads.

Years ago there was documentary called "The Tourist Trap". Each week, there would be bunch of holiday makers from a different nation, who'd come along thinking they were taking part in a fairly normal documentary.

In reality, a set of identical disasters and difficult situations were sprung on each group, as an experiment to see how different national groups behaved.

For the British, almost any situation brought about the same response: Start drinking.

Fill us with booze, and you'll get the best from us (And sometimes the worst )

I've never been, but if Glastonbury is anywhere near as friendly and accepting as people say, then all who attend should be proud of themselves for making it what it is.

I always associate patriotism or nationalism with people trying to claim credit for other peoples achievements, and this thread hasn't altered this!

No, I'm not a very britishy person, and the things I like about glastonbury are the international elements and the creative and arty and hippyish things. I've noticed over the past few years the media have started painting it as some sort of "quintessential" (man, I hate that word!) british thing- I don't really see it as that but everyone is entitled to interpret it however they percieve or experience it.

I like the fact that everyone can go there and come back have experienced something completely different from everone else

Other than on TV I have never seen or heard that anthem played. I don't even know the words to it, doubt many people where I stay do

I don't think God Save The Queen in the UK would go down quite as well as Flower of Scotland in the frozen north, perhaps Jerusalem or some other British type tune, but not that one!

Personally, I don't get the fuss about nationality. Glastonbury is a great festival, possibly the greatest festival in fact, but I would argue that it is not typically British. There is a freedom of expression there which I'm sorry to say, I would not consider to be quintessentialy British. Glastonbury is a celebration of the world and the rich heritage of diversity and culture.

I think it's great that you're proud of Glastonbury, but I disagree that it is a great display of Britishness. It's a great display of humanity.

Glastonbury makes me proud to be human.
