Flags

Yeah, never liked those borrowers, bloody thieves.

Fair enough, I think the problem was it got to a point last year where the the flags were actually blocking the views from the screen as well. I personally don't want them banned, I think it just needs to be toned down a bit & I like to think a polite request from Michael/Emily Eavis would be more than enough.

I can't believe people are voting countless times.

FFS - is it THAT much of an issue?! :P

They're a bit annoying and I'd prefer there were fewer, but they hardly ruin the whole act, do they?

At Woodstock when the thunder storm rolls in, the PA guy gets on the mike and manages to get 250,000 to sit down and take cover. How hard can it be for there to be an announcement before each band comes on to say 'flags down now please, have consideration for those behind you'..? It could be followed up by a 'no flags' chant similar to the 'no rain' chant to help cajole the flag waving numpties into showing some consideration....

The flags bring a bit of spirit to the festival, they're part of the experience. I personally love looking at all the flags waving about, it's fantastic. Keep them I say! Who cares if the people on TV can't see? They should've bought a ticket...

Gah, more bloody whining.

Flags are great. Too high up to ever really block my view and great for orientation. I've never understood the hate. I hope they stay forever. :P

Nobody is ever going to have a perfect view of the stage, and if you're that far back that you can't see the flags due to the stages there is a screen behind the sound tent thingy. I can see what you mean, because I was up on the top of the field for Blur last year because I needed to make a quick getaway to get home in time for work in the morning, and it did impair my view slightly. Is it really that hugely important to see an ant-sized figure on the stage though? You're there for the music, you can hear the music, you've got the crowd atmosphere...no biggy.

Yeah, fair enough, less flags = better view. I'd still prefer to have the flags though. That's my opinion. I personally feel that they bring something extra to the experience, and I love being able to turn around in the crowd and see a field of flags waving about. They don't even bother me when they obscure my view, because like I said earlier, you're there for the music. If you can hear the music, what's the big deal?

Nobody is asking for the perfect view, that is impossible. However there were huge chunks of people that could see nothing but flags. Surely they have paid money to see acts therefore should be entitled too. Do people really have the right to spoil peoples views just because they want to be seen on tv or it makes it easier to find their friends?

I say nobody has the right to take away, what ever little part, of the enjoyment a person deserves when they pay money. I feel bad enough standing on front of people because I'm 6ft2 and often try my best to manouver so people can see better. People have these flags standing for hours in the same point and either don't give a sh*t or haven't thought it through. I personally couldn't stand in the crowd knowing people behind me couldn't see because I have a flag smack on front of their view.

I'd quite like to see a reduction but not a ban but only because I hardly ever stay for the whole of a pyramid stage set and like to watch it on telly when I get home.

I can't stand the crush at the front, and standing at the back to watch a little lego figure on stage/on a big tv screen obscured by flags seems a bit pointless.

I'll usually stand around uncomfortably for half an hour and then go off for a pint and a falafel and a giggle at the comedy tent or a frug at avalon.

Must be me age.

I agree with you with the 'morality of flag-bearing' section, and i'm 6'4 so I know exactly your problem with standing in front of people. I also think you've got a point with your first point, but personally, I don't have a problem with them. That's my opinion, and obviously people are going to have different opinions. This subject is very evenly divided, although the organisers are reluctant to ban the flags too so this debate may all be in vain at the end of the day. I see the flags as more of an aesthetic thing than an annoyance, but again people will have different opinions and views, and i'm cool with that.

Give the flag wavers an area away from the centre of the stage where they can have their fun but not completely spoil it for everyone else. Some flags are smart but when it gets to the stage where the majority are having their enjoyment of watching a performance obscured by a sea of cloth then maybe it is time to ban them from the centre.

I vote Ban

mate, seeing hueys face that day will live forever -he had a total connection to the crowd, he could see them, they could see him.

if its 'just about the music' stay home, get 1 neighbour to put his sprinkler system on you while another neigbours waves his pants in front of your face while listening to the cd

    • Surely nowadays with so much data analytics available on every division in world football and so much awareness that people aren't suckered in on the basis of a decent World Cup game... right?   Although tbf, from what I saw, Australia's game plan worked very well. But that was as much thanks to Turkey blowing varying opportunities given they created enough chances but couldn't finish, a la what happened with Switzerland against Qatar when they really could and should've won by 3/4 goals.
    • I missed Viagra Boys for a good spot for Gorillaz. Was a nice weekend and festival for me. Would definitely come back, if the line up is right. Get back home safe everyone.
    • The Last Temptation - new Heaven 17 documentary film directed by James Strong. Premiered at Sheffield Docfest this weekend.    I really enjoyed it. Affectionate, insightful, and honest. A nice mix of archival and footage, interviews and clips from the last tour. Martyn and Glenn are like an old married couple.   Plus a snippet of news from the Q&A, Martyn is recording new BEF material, and Phil Oakey has collaborated on the one of tracks. The film shows them meeting in Fagans for the first time in over 35 years.
    • Glad I’ve still got it booked off for my 50th
    • That would be perfect!
