Campervan field, anyone else in a VW?

Just a quick question, looking at the rules for campervans it says that you need to have built in sleeping facilities and either fitted cooking or washing faciliies or the van will be turned away. We only bought the van back in October and the people we bought it off kept it a little sparse so at the moment we only have a full width rock and roll bed in the back though we do have the original stove, it's not fitted, just loose. We're planning on getting a new camping interior this year but I'm worried that if we can't get it done on time we won't be allowed in. From what I understand the rules are in place to stop people just turning up in a transit with an air bed in the cargo area. Ours is clearly not a commercial van but does anyone know how strictly they enforce the rules? Obviously with a 7 months pregnant wife we don't want to have to be camping in a tent

We'll hopefully be there in a 1972 bay, we're in the process of looking at buying her, if not, we'll be in a friends T25.

redmosquito - we're both in VWs with one heavily pregnant woman onboard :P

I was wondering about space too, we'll be buying an awning speshly, if we buy the van (which is looking very likely, woohoo), any suggestions on which awning to go for would be much appreciated!

Will post a pic in here if we buy her, she's beautiful.

Ta, looks ideal!

Having the room is a bonus, will make a good loo for an 8-month pregnant woman for middle of the night toilet trips :P

Handy to have a door at the side/front as well for Glasto, I guess. Let's hope we get the camper now! We've definitely got Kitty at least, who's a friends T25.

Turns out the '72 bay we're off to look at next weekend has had the sink and cooker removed, so will have to sort that before Glasto. Has the drain and feed for the sink still in place apparently, but the plastic sink was all cracked so they took it out, and the gas for the cooker took up too much storage for them.

We'll get a replacement sink as that seems pretty straight-forward, but would a camping stove sat in place suffice as cooking equipment, or should we look at getting one of those kitchen unit things before Glasto?

We're likely to want one anyway, tbh, depends on the spondoolies available after buying the van! We'll be on bread and water for a while :P Worth it tho, I hope.

Yeah and the thing with bays is they ARE campers, its not like you're trundling up in a Tranny van with a mattress in the back :P

Everyone KNOWS VW T2s are the creme de la creme of camper vans :P - especially late bays :P

Slightly biased much? :P

No :P

For 'restored', read 'making good to get through an MOT'. Bit of a difference.

Still looking for something, but it won't be as old, I think we were being a bit naive with a baby on the way and a limited budget. Thinking of transit conversions now, not quite the same, eh?

Haha, old and new vw's will be lucky to get down the A303 l(and thats on a cold day!) let alone onto the campervan field. How I smurk and giggle as I see you lot on the side of the road with your head in your hands!

I of course will be cruising past you in my trusty 15 year old Ford Transit camper, hardly ever needs oil or water, and always gets from A to B , however far.

Happy Overheating folks in your stylishly retro orange/yellow/green but shite VW's!!

Only joking (in case I get a punishment from heaven!), but for gawds sake, go and buy something reliable, it may even have a bit of space inside to justify being called a campervan!!

feefeetee,

I agree with the T25 options as mentioned.

I think the bays and splits are the best looking vans out there by a long way but when I bought my T25 last year I did not have the budget to get a bay or split in the same solid condition. I did a load of research and managed to get a T25 Westy Hightop off of an internet auction site, which I am chuffed to whatsit with. The hightop can have the road manners of a boat when it's windy but when it's parked up it's rock solid. The pop tops benefit from better road behaviour and cleaner lines although I am concerned about the opportunity for leaks and wind wobble when parked, I am sure pop top owners can advise on this, just personal preference.

Here are some links I found very handy. Good luck and I hope you get a van sorted in time.

I second that re-T25s - great vans - larger than bays and more modern ( therefore more reliable..and for the ford brigade fyi they are also water cooled) check out club 80-90 on the web for buying tips and for sale stuff as well- PS I take one to Glasto every year - great comfort - recommend an awning as well minimal extra cost for loads more space

Thanks chaps and chapesses, we've gone down an entirely different route and put a deposit down on a Mazda Bongo, pick it up on Friday, when we're off up the Lake District to test it out for the weekend, nice long drive (6 hours ish) should test it out well enough.

Not quite the same, I know! Still, it has the original seats with belts in the back, which makes me feel better about putting a baby seat in it. Will need to sort an awning for it, will wait till we pick it up and have a weekend in it first.

Don't suppose there's a Bongo thread... :P
