Brilliant start to the series!

I think the island is a Phantom-Zone-esque style prison, that moves through time to contain Smokey and Jacob is the designated warden who brings in other inmates who have committed crimes against their own soul, in order to help him do his job and prevent the "devil" escaping his "hell".
