The Other stage arrived with NME sponsorship in 1992, and the music programme reflected that with a sudden leaning to indiedom. The Stage was called the NME Stage for the last time in 1995, and the 1997 festival was the first to see it given its current name The Other stage.

Acoustic Stage

Offering a mix of an unplugged acoustic mix of folk, blues, and roots. The Acoustic Tent is a huge blue Kyam tent The Acoustic stage is one of the oldest stages at Glastonbury first appearing in 1984 when the event only had three stages, and it has remained in the same place situated in Norman's Close right next to the Kidz field. For real ale drinkers there's the well stocked The Red Flag just beside it.

Before you finish it off I can confirm there was indeed a second stage at the 1979 festival with a full programme of acts including Nik Turner's Sphynx. The stage was fairly small, outdoor and didn't have any sort of name attached to it. There was always at least another stage like this all the way through the 80's (I went to them all).

I thought that was the Jazz World Stage, originally the second stage, but I thought it first appeared at the festival in 1983 on the southern edge of the site in Glebeland, as a ramshackle collection of tarpaulins offering, and it wasn't to become a proper outdoor stage until 1985, I didn't realise there was two stages before that.

That one was the one WOMAD were invited to run their own stage in 1987 and added a world music flavour. There was no festival in 1988, and in 1989 the licence was only granted with the condition that only the main stage have amplified music. The stage still located near West Holts returned in 1990 as the World Music Stage before returning in 1992.

The Jazz World stage first appeared where it is today in 1992 as an area dedicated to broadening the scope of the festival, in 2003 it was called One world Stage for a year before returning to its more recognised name.

  • 2 weeks later...

I remember the other stage in 87, and my failing memory is that it was to the left of the Pyramid stage as you look from front ( i guess were the Marketplace is now ish). Even more dodgy memory is watching Gay Bikers On Acid on that stage. And a white transit van being set alight after it got stuck in the mud, between both stages.

Only other memory is watching Courtney Pine on a lovely Sunday afternoon sat on the hill.

OKKY asked

Is there a reason for calling it the other stage? I would have thought a load of hippies on acid could have come up with something more creative...

Was it not called the 2nd Stage, then Nme came along and sponsored it, when that sponsorship finished it reverted to Other Stage, i guess cause he didnt want/or could not get sponsorship for it.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
