The Problem with Flags.

I've been watching some of last years bbc coverage I've kept and whoevers working the camera up in the mixing desk is stuggling to get a shot through a wall of flags!

Not to mention trying to see the stage through them when you're in the crowd.

I know I might sound like a moany old bastard, but people now seem to be competing to bring the biggest f***ing flags they can find.

Now, bringing a green door with abuse about JZ written on the back of it to shakin stevens, or someone surfing accross the crowd on an actual surf board to the Beach Boys, now that's Glastonbury genius.....

....I've even seen a 3ft Yucca plant in a pot glide accross the crowd...now was that to Orbital?...

Less Flags, more craziness!

i could nbever be arsed with them but they make it easier for me to locate my friends again after wandering off but they are generally just irritating and not very clever.

I don't like them :) BUT they helped me find MY mates last year. However, the best ones were usually the little cuddly toys taped to sticks :D The peeps carrying flags around must be EXHAUSTED by the end of the day - what a faff.

Watching on telly, I always thought the flags looked good when showing the crowds at night but that was before I went for the first time and now I've changed my mind....

It's umbrellas that REALLY annoy me.

Ruin the gig for everyone behind you because you don't want to get wet.

At least flags add a bit of colour. I'd never bother with one though.

Don't like the omnipresent Welsh / Irish / St. George Cross vibe though.

I think it would be funny to get a load of flags close to the front with offensive expletives written clearly on both sides. That way, you're influencing what the BBC will show.

But as a Glasto band watcher, I find it annoying. I just don't care what football team you support, if it's that important, go to the f'n match instead!

sorry

They can be annoying, espec if they have several flags on the same pole.

As for crazy objects, I saw a dildo stuck on a flagpole last year, which was being used to great comic effect, kept on being brought down to touch someone on the head. Their look of shock followed by smiles as a rubber cock flashed in to their vision was fun to see.

During The Editors' set in 2007, there was a jolly chap by us, brandishing a home-made cow on a pole.

With wings.

I think it was made of plywood, and as he jigged around, the cow's mouth would flap about.

This was the best thing *ever*...

(proviso line : Of course, I was quite off my face at the time)

...but as darkness fell, he flipped a switch, and oh by the power of jeebus, the cow's eyes lit up!!

It was quite possibly the best thing I've ever seen.

Ever. :)

oh i can more than imagine that having that thing leering down at you would be funny. the effort people put into this festival - both those organising and those attending - is incredible. i mean, somebody had to build that, the get it there, then carry it around all day...

brilliant stuff!

:)

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
