The BBC monthly outlook has been updated and is sounding promising!

Monday 11th to Sunday 24th June 2007

“Temperatures back to the seasonal norm”

The Azores High will strengthen but showers will still feed in from the north Atlantic for many areas. Once again, temperatures will be rather warm in the southwest, but closer to the norm elsewhere.

The best of any sunshine will be for sheltered eastern counties, whereas most of the showers are likely to affect northwest England and the Midlands.

I don't think that update, just posted in that last 30 minutes, to the BBC 4 weeker is particularly promising myself. Not disastrous, but 'Temperatures Back to the Seasonal Norm' suggests very ordinary temps ... no Glasto heatwave for us!

As you say, it's rather non-commital, and effectively useless in terms of Glasto weekend. I'll be asking our forecasters for a detailed forecast a few days beforehand, which we can then compare to Steve's, with one of us getting bragging rights afterwards  (unless we both agree, of course!)

I am the sunshine fairy and decree it will be sunny.

Here are the rules

  • Everyone has to bring wellies.

  • Everyone has to bring an umbrella.

  • Everyone has to bring a waterproof or poncho like item.

  • Everyone has to be bring clean dry clothes (wrapped in plastic so there is no chance of them getting damp) to change into after it has rained and the clothes they had on are now wet/muddy.

If everyone follows the rules there will be no rain.

While it's all good fun discussing the weather, it's all pretty much pointless. The forecast won't be reliable until a couple of days before the festival (and even then, could be wrong).

Solution:

- realise that you'll enjoy the festival no matter what the weather

- make you preparations flexible - you don't need to decide until the morning you leave the house whether you're taking waterproof trousers or a sun hat. Decide which based on the forecast that day.

I have been to Glastonbury four times.

It rained and got muddy every year.

1997 and 1998 were also really cold.

1998 was the worst and I went home on the Saturday.

I enjoyed 2004, but it wasn't very warm.

I felt for those that got flooded in 2005, but the weather - once it stopped raining - was OK.

I went to three festivals last year and it rained at them all.

The only genuinely sunny festival that I remember was Reading several years ago (i.e. when I was still in my teens). 1996, possibly.

I do think, therefore, that I am due a dry and hopefully sunny Glasto in 2007. It will therefore be nice.

For years I've used this and its always been pretty accurate: http://weather.unisys.com/gfsx/9panel/gfsx...9panel_eur.html

in 10 days it'll start to show the Wednesday (shows 9 days out). Once the fest is near (on the 19th say) you'll be able to see where the existing fronts in the atlantic are - these generate the majority of the UK's rain. In 2005 there was a feckoff one in the Atlantic but it wasn't clear if it was incoming when I left for Glasto on the Tuesday night. We all know what it did now though.

although forecasts have been downgraded from "phew, what a scorcher!" for the entire summer most forecasts are suggesting a significant improvement in mid to late june. it's getting dicey now whether we will see the benefit, but i have hope in my heart.

never been to glasto in the rain. to me it's a place of sunburn, parched grass and dust. given that we are supposed to be in the grip of global warming i find it deeply ironic that my early 90s glastos were sunfests but the recent years seem to have been total washouts. steeling myself to deal with any rain, but it won't be the same festival for me at all.

Just get used to it.

We're going to drown....at some point the heavens will open and you willg et wet.

Either way it will be cold in the dark parts of the day.

Just face it.... in june our end of the planet jsut isn't clsoe enough to the sun for the weather to be dry and sunny.
