Can I reccomend you guys to try out Hope of the States? Is actually a newish band I think you might like, what they do with thier music seems to be the type of thing u are looking for. And The Secret Machines perhaps.

Cheers for the suggestion, however I know both and can't really say I'm fussed by them.

There are very few new bands that emerge that I remotely like these days, I freely admit that. People mistake it for being 'close-minded' etc, but it's a case of just plain not liking it.

Panic At The Disco for example...what an awful band they are. I don't write them off because they are new, I write them off because they are absolutely bloody awful.

It should be drilled into kids as soon as they're born, if not sooner. Along with the Beatles, so they know what REAL pop music is about. And some James Brown, so they realise that R&B should be rhythm and BLUES. f**k off RnB.

It seems that kids these days mostly like 'the next big thing' type bands...Pearl Jam are old and have a history...they aren't something Kerrang and NME can bang on about all the time for being this that and the other.

You sound really anti-youth. Remember, you were young once, and when you got into PJ they didn't have a history. No doubt some patronising buffoon would have told you then that some band from the 80s they liked were better than PJ for precisely the same reasons.

Don't say that. I was watching some live footage of them and comparing it to some stuff from the early 90's. It struck me that 'kids' as such, watching this would not be able to comprehend just how revolutionary, new and genuine they were. I then thought of U2, who everyone a little older than me still into good rock music, hailed as being a great exciting, revolutionary and genuine band. I had always perceived them as a moderate rock, middle of the road, established outfit, and thought that they were being hailed these things due to status, history, establishment etc (ring any bells). I remember the contempt I had for them. However, listening to earlier - pre sell out - U2, you can here that fresh new, exciting revolutionary sound. Just took a little time to develop a more appreciative palate to get it.

My only hope is that Pearl Jam don't sell out in the way super bands like U2, REM and RHCP did/have. The only difference I can see is that they embrace privacy, are active in their local music scene, shun the media at their own expence and have little time for gimickry and image. I hope that they remain genuine and that this super status doesn't turn them sterile, it certainly hasn't as yet.

The reason we bang on about Pearl Jam is because they refuse to do it themselves and the British press relentlessly slates them. Those who weren't part of the whole grunge thing will not be aware of the very strong anti-middle man do-it-ourselves ethic that came as an integral part of very far reaching community. This very private and insular band are only known through word of mouth, they are not fashioned rock gods - they're lead singer is still a garage station attendant who joined a local band and who now, through chance, sings songs to the world. He'll no doubt mention that at CW.

Whereas on the other hand:

I'm 37, I bought and loved 'Ten' back in 1992 and have been fairly disappointed in subsequent releases. Admittedly, 'Ten' is a great album and a tough act to follow. I've also yet to listen to the new one, so that could yield a pleasant surprse.

It takes all sorts, after all.
