I've been reading the Uncut Nick Cave Ultimate Music Guide, and of course it's been completely fascinating throughout.

But it's also been reassuring to learn that music critics have always been full of shit. You read the early reports on The Birthday Party, who the critic believes reduces The Cramps to a state of instant irrelevancy.

It seems there have always been bands and critics who react violently against the way things are, and of course popular music probably needs such nihilists in order to properly function, but I've always wondered what the victory conditions are for such people?

Reading about The Birthday Party, you get the impression that they - and all adoring fans and critics - wanted all other music to suddenly STOP EXISTING, and for all musicians to suddenly start sounding like The Birthday Party.

I wonder if there'll ever be a generation that accepts that "alternative" music only sounds fresh when compared to the "mainstream"?

I have seen Smashing Pumpkins twice

Once about 10/11 years ago with the original band minus the keyboardist obviously and that was one of the best gigs ive ever seen

And once more recently with the new lineup, in my opinion that show was devoid of any real passion and they just weren't the same band, Corgan looked like he disliked the rest of the band and it looked like they disliked him back, just didn't enjoy it all despite the fact the music was all played rather well

In my opinion if your stuck between seeing these two, I would go for Nick Cave as you might be disappointed

Maybe I just saw a bad gig but ive seen both recently and Nick Cave is definitely the way to go

What I find amusing/adorable in that magazine is how badly a young Nick Cave reacts to critics. Quite a sensitive soul deep down it would seem.

I suppose you would have to be to write some of that music.

i was tempted to watch the start of Cave and then leg it over to Other for Pumpkins as he starts 35 minutes before they do, but i know that's a stupid idea as once i start watching i won't want to leave. still Pumpkins for me!

I have a small hope that I might see Pumpkins' last song, hopefully Tonight, Tonight or Today. I'll give it my best shot anyway.

hmm this is true. and possibly even From Her To Eternity if he plays it as early in his set as he has been. tempting. will be there for Vampire Weekend anyway so will possibly position myself well in the crowd so that i can make a swift exit over to the Pumpkins after 15 minutes of Cave

My Sunday is full of tactical decisions like this one i.e. How best to position myself in certain crowds to get out quickly.

For Cave I'll be front and centre though. Hopefully Pumpkins will be furthest from my mind when he's on!

gotta say i'm gonna be devastated to miss Papa Won't Leave You, Henry live. recently become one of my most listened to songs after i rekindled my love of Cave. why i thought downloading and listening to his discography before this horrible clash was a good idea i'll never know

You're right though, he has a vast array of songs to choose from. Personally I'd love Stranger Than Kindness, City of Refuge and St Huck.

To be honest I'd don't care what he plays as he's one of those artists who has no bad songs. The only thing that will upset me is a lack of From Her To Eternity now I'm primed for it.
