Glasto first timers and knocking on!

Hi, this year will be our first Glasto and our second ever festival. We went to V Fest last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but perhaps not the clientele as much! So this year it is Glasto for us.

As we are knocking on a bit, we are going in a motor home and coming down from the North (York) and I would appreciate any guidance on the following please -

1) Are there "quiet" areas in the camper van sites or is it just east and west sites?

2) Coming from the North I assume camper van site east is the one we will want?

3) I appreciate that glass is a big no no so any beers etc need to be in cans, but what about glass within the motor home such as drinking glasses or food that comes in bottles, which will just go in the motor home bin, is this still not allowed.

4) Fires and bbq's, are these allowed in the camper van fields or as I suspect a big no no given that there are lots of vehicles and therefore fuel around!?

5) My mrs is fretting about her hair and the state it will be in without straighteners for a week as we wont be able to use the onboard sockets without a power cable (what did women do before straighteners?), so are there stalls at the festival that do hair washing/straightening etc (there were at V).

6) And finally, anybody done Glasto in a motor home before able to tell me about getting rid of waste water from the motor home? The one we have has a pull handle at the back, which dumps the water from under the motor home, so I do not know how I will be able to get the water to a grey waste disposal point as I'm not sure there will be enough room under the motor home to stick a bucket/water carrier under, so any advice greatly received.

Thanks!!!

From one old sod to another,

1/ Have used campervan site for the last 2 years no problems with excessive noise but with people coming and going you cannot expect total silence

2/ Coming down from Nottingham we use the East campervan field.

3/ You will probably be asked on arrival at site by security to look in your vehicle for glass etc so suggest transfer coffee etc to plastic

containers same with drinking vessels, bit of a pain but better to be safe than sorry.

4/ Fires definetley not allowed but BBQs do not seeem to a problem

5/ Saw a stall to the right of the Pyramid doing lady things including straighteners(to save money, tell her how nice and sexy she looks in a hat)

6/ There are grey water waste areas in the campervan field, ensure your waste is empty before you arrive unfortunatly cannot help with your

water disposal problem .

Hope this helps

There most certainly is nothing like the big shipping container hairdressing salon things you get at V with pay points for straighteners etc but there are some beauty stalls that are popping up these days if you know where to look.

The more commercial end of town (west of the Pyramid most certainly on the run down to the John Peel) did, as Hilton says have a unit set up. I saw it when walking past, cant remember its name though (night have had Angels in the title) but there are stickers and flyers and pretty ladies looking all glammed up helping advertise the service knocking about and probably a listing in the programme too.

Whilst many of us on the Glasto forum do tend to have a go at people who deign to want to get their hair straightened whilst at the fest, christ even mentioning you want to wash your hair will often get many cries of disgust sent their way, it isnt a crime and even the G has started to cotton on that some ladies do want to feel and look nice at the festival.

There was a caravan that offered hairdressing services a couple of years in the middle of the main market but it wasnt a corporate affair.

At the end of the day though, this is the daddy of the festivals and to be honest, you are still very much expected to rough it with the rest of us. It's certainly more about leaving the outside world behind if you can.

If the missus does decide to let go a bit and ditch the straighteners, the only no no to bear in mind to is not to hog a water tap if washing your hair under it. Fill a large bottle or two with water and use those instead to not upset people queueing. And considering washing hair at a less busy time of day (aka not mornings) is also a good tip.

I've gone in a camper-van for the past two years. I think others have covered most of the points but I'll add a few things.

First if you are staying in Camper-van East, you should be aware of the "hill of death" It's really not all that bad, but by the walk home on the last day it seems huge. That of course isn't the case in the west, but I've not tried it there so can't comment. The plus is that as it's your first time, it's amazing when you first see the festival spread out in front of you.

Second, if you get there very early you may be able to ask to park by a fence. That cuts down the number of "walk-pasts" in the night. That said I've not had a problem sleeping. People are fairly considerate.

Finally, think about your power usage. Generators are forbidden. Some people run their engines for a while to charge their batteries, but even that is frowned upon if excessive. Best bet is big leisure batteries, or a solar panel.

All that said I've had some great neighbours and the laid back atmosphere of the festival extends out into the camper-van sites. Have a fantastic time. After V you will be blown away.

    • Geese playing for 1:20 instead of just an hour was a lovely surprise. The energy was great!
    • Oh well that's why then, I assumed it was still the same. Thanks!
