hope yous dont mind a newbie stepping in to try this! :)

i would like to lose a stone for glasto, im exacty 11 stone at the moment, going to start doing alot of walking ( i live on the coast so its more pleasant to walk), but i cant go to the gym as much as i would like to as a couple of years ago i had 6 broken bones, and messed up my leg alot, blah blah, basically cant bend my knee correctly, i am going to go back swimming next week, how many times a week is this recommended?

Me and my friend are going to join zumba next week i think, i did dance for 14 years before my leg messed up, so il just try do what i can there.

Its food thats the hard part for me, which meats are best to eat and which way to be cooked? i like fruit and veg so il make sure i fill myself up on them. I just get baddd cravings for chocolate! ha.

Do we think its possible for me to lose that weight in time for glasto??

ohh also, whats the best way to lose weight in arms? my arms went incrediby muscley from being on crutches for 2 years, once i came off them they just turned into fat :( if i used weights wouldnt that just turn the fat into muscle again?

:)

Muscle can't turn into fat, it's a myth.

Unfortunately you can't spot lose fat, it just comes off where it comes off.

Best thing to do is to do toning exercises on your arms, it won't them any smaller but it will give them a better shape :)

Yes, you probably could at a stretch lose a stone for Glasto. Really it's 2lbs a week maximum but in the first week or 2 you will probably lose more than that.

Rather than say what the best foods are you probably should be following a calorie controlled plan like counting calories or Weight Watchers points / pro points, Pro points is best because it takes into account that not all calories are equal - 100 calories from carbs is more fattening than 100 calories from protein, for instance.

Don’t tell yourself that you can't have chocolate because that'll just make you crave it even more. If you’re craving it have some fruit first to regain a bit of control & then if you still want it, have it but keep the portion sensible. Maybe get some fun size bars in etc...

well done on your loss last week dvjj!

i have my first weightwatchers weigh in tonight, really don't know what to expect. In comparison to a normal (recent) week then i think i've definitely cut down on what i've been eating a lot. but i have probably had more than average alcohol, oops.

i did change all my boozing from wine and/or cider to gin/vodka with slimline mixers, so maybe it will have helped?!

will let y'all know how i get on, thanks for encouraging me into joining (even though i wish i hadn't right now - nervous)

Right, I'm in. I'm generally a skinny bugger, all exept my belly and I suspect most of that is booze.

I'd like to get down to 10stone by the festival and generally feel a bit fitter. So I'm cutting down on the ale and wine at the weekends and not drinking at all in the week. Trying to ignore the snacks at work and stick to fruit and to make as much of my own food as possible.

Thanks for the inspiration and good luck all. xxx

Despite not having a great deal of money I shelled out £48 for a month at the gym last Friday. Can probably only get 3 weeks of swim and gym done as I'm working for a full week before the G but I am determined to try and trim up in that time. Might do the Zumba this Friday. I cant see huge miracles happening but it would be nice to get to the G with less of the cider barrel that currently is a near permanent feature around my middle. Before plying it full of cider all over again!

My nurse I see every 3 months told me swimming and using the crosstrainer is the best for trying to shift that bit of lumpiness. As for food, Cauldron tofu in the fridge, noodles and a trusty tub of miso paste for super yum and healthy lunches. Going to try and be a bit stronger willed than I usually am. Managed it for the G in 07.

I know I'm pretty late to this thread but I've kind of had goals for Glasto fitness since deciding to go last year, none of which I've met. I've managed to lose 5 pounds in the last year while losing just under an inch around my waist and building muscle more or less everywhere, not as much as I'd hoped though and my cardio fitness is sh**e.

To put that into context :-

I've been on the get fit thing for what seems like forever now(around 8 years), getting fed up with it to be honest, I'm what some more successful fit club members might affectionately refer to as a "skinny fat guy".

When I started off, I was barely 9 stone and REALLY skinny, 28" jeans with a shirt tucked in and a belt kind of skinny, no matter what I ate, or how much, it didn't make a difference, I know that's pretty much a cuss in a get fit thread, but for a guy in his early to mid 20's, it's really not a good look. Firstly, I set out trying to build myself up, changed my diet, introduced a lot of protein, high quality fats and decent low GI carbs, took suppliments and really went for it. I now weigh 12 stone 10, I've inevitably gained some fat, especially around the stomach and obliques(love handles) probably(hopefully!) due also to the fact that I'm through the 30 y.o. barrier now, but I've also gained a lot of muscle.

I was hoping to tone up around the waist a bit more than I have over the last year, but I get a lot of back pain/injuries which makes working my abs pretty difficult, every time I try to "take it up a step", increase weights or intensity of exercise, my back bails out on me and I have to rest up for 3 weeks, had my first physio session the other day and am going to need to wear a back support while walking around glasto, kind of makes it all seem like a bit of a waste of time, but I guess you've got to stay strong with the struggle. :)

Morning All

wow, it's busy in here this morning - very motivating!

dvjj - the weight in went amazing well, i lost 9.5lbs!! to be honest, i'm pretty suspicious of it, am sure that either my starting weight was wrong or i'm going to go back next week and find out it was all some kind of error and i've put half of it back on! (I also did a bit of a cheat and went on a 2 day bender - not exactly healthy i know but normally go straight back to normal weight for bingeing on pizza, crisps and pop afterwards)

either way though, it's pretty motivating and i do at least feel like i'm not totally bursting out the top of my work skirt anymore (which i nice as i sit in it 10 hours a day!). Also, as someone on here mentioned, i put the weight on REALLY quickly (the last stone in under a month - the rest of it has been hanging around for ages!). and apparently that means it comes off quicker.

Anyway, i blew a bit of it having thai last night but stayed off the booze and went for a fish option instead of massive plate of fried noodles. i'm hoping that healthier choices instead of giving things up altogether will help.

how did you get on this morning? you're so close now, everyone says how difficult this bit is - think you're doing amazingly for staying at it :-D

Luscious Lucy - hi! i'm sure joining the gym is a great move. i find that if i do any kind of exercise i'm much more motivated to eat sensibly as i don't want to waste the effort i've put in ;-). why is it that you favour tofu, noodles and miso so much when you're slimming - do you make a noodle soup? (i've never used miso)

CitizenErased - depending on the nature of your back injury, i think swimming is meant to be good for toning up and supportive to joints etc? perhaps you could ask the physio - i injured my lower back a few years back and wasn't able to swim breaststroke but was advised to do the others as much as i could

good luck everybody - 4 weeks today we'll be saying to heck with our diets and cracking open a cold one in a field (hopefully)

The Miso soup thing is a kickback to when I followed the You Are What You Eat plan religiously in late 2004 and lost 1.5 stone in a few short weeks. Although that mad witch is a mad witch, the food plans, though suitably restrictive, worked bloody wonders because all you are eating is very good, nutritious food. Cost me a fortune to get started, over £200 investing in nuts, seeds, seaweed, miso soup, tofu, beans, vegetables and special teas.

This time just sticking with a combination of a nice food plan from my mum's copy of Woman & Home and the miso soup for lunches. Basically trying to reduce the calories if I can. Not really done this in a fair while (actually trying to watch what I eat). Well, just 3 weeks ago I was doing the total opposite I can tell you. If I get in the right slightly obsessive mindset to actually lose some weight, it works. Also having an outfit I want to look fairly reasonable in at the G is helping as motivation. Already noticing a teeny bit of trimming up with the 3 hours of swimming I have done. Going twice a day already!

wow, two swims a day?! unfortunately i've just run out of cash for the month so no swimming for me until next week!

might have a read up on miso noodle soup this evening and give it a try though (the supermarket will accept my credit card even if the swimming pool won't!)

I've managed to loose approximately seven pounds for this festival. (considering i started summer last year, i'm not to impressed) i put on a stone in the last two years desperately trying to take it back off!

HOWEVER.

My plan is to have one of those hot clay wraps (anybody heard of them?)

You basically get wrapped up like a zombie in hot clay for two hours so you sweat out all the nasty toxins in your body. Supposed to tone you up a whole lot more. (though you don't actually loose any weight) guaranteed to last a month. and said to be incredibly good for you!

I've heard such good things about this. some places guarentee you'll loose at least 6 inches over your whole body. Not too much money either!

definitely trying this!

Thanks for the comments folks, swimming could definately be a good idea, I actually work out mostly at home on a squat rack and multi-gym, I don't think I could find the time or motivation for a gym membership ATM so I'm limited on what equipment I can use. Have been given some back exercises to do though, so hopefully they'll improve things over time.

Well done dvjj, that's awesome! if you do that each week until the festival you can even have a week off and still make your target :D thanks for the sugar free jelly tip too, might make a few for the fridge in the office and at home. I've been having yeo valley frozen yoghurt for treats so far - only 4 pro points for a hundred grams and makes me think of sitting in front of the cider bus in the sun too

i've got my first lunchtime zumba class at work today. little bit worried about what colour i'm going to be when i get back to my desk, but it's all in a good cause right?

starknaked - a friend of mine swears by those clay wraps, she does one herself at home before every holiday. i'd forgotten about them but might consider it if it'll keep my thighs away from one another for the week! is it the universal contour wrap that you're looking at?

well done to all that are doing it the sensible way.... unfortunately ive left it to late... so am just doing my usual crash panic diet :) ... soft food diet is brill for this... you can eat anything that has the consistency of liquid or baby food...(no liquidising it yourself though...and no butter straight from tub :)) first discovered it when had some dental work done and had to.... loose atleast 3lb a week usually around 5 in the first

oh wow, never heard of that! so even ready made soups and things, like the covent garden ones?

i had another question for people - not exactly a fitness thing, more beauty but thought you guys might know.

Ever since i first put on weight as a student (doesn't everyone?) i have had a 'pouch' of flab on the outside of one of my thighs. i know, attractive, right?! it's only one leg, and it's right at my widest point.

Now i'm sure if i was to lose all of my body fat this would disappear, but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas for how to reduce it's appearance? is this the type of thing that body brushing might help? it's literally like a little bag of extra wobbly flesh taped to the side of my leg....

sorry if that's grossed anyone out over breakfast, it's probably not as bad as it sounds but i'd love to shift it

ok - i'm sat outside our monthly breakfast meeting at work watching them unload bacon sandwiches, cheese and mushroom muffins, pastries, flapjacks, juices etc. Am eating a pre-emptive bowl of porridge in an attempt to eat nothing but fruit once i get in there.

somebody tell me it's worth it?! :(
