I'll admit I only really got into Biffy with Only Revolutions, and I've heard their old stuff, and I'm not the biggest fan of it.

That being said I do like Jaggy Snake and Glitter and Trauma and will go insane if they are played.

Many of Horror and God & Satan are one of the two most beautiful songs I have ever head, lyrically mostly... so I might have a tear in my eye when they play. I don't care, they are beautiful songs.

I absolutely love Biffy, got Blackened Sky years ago and loved it, but honestly I prefer Puzzle and Only Revolutions to the other albums.

That said, I would prefer a slightly less O.R. heavy set, but as long as 57, Justboy and Glitter and Trauma make it in their Leeds set I'll be content ;)

I'm totally up for Biffy. Been following them around the country since the early days around 10 years ago, so it's going to be kind of wierd seeing them play third down on the main stage after so many years travelling from pub to pub to watch them play. As with the majority of long-time Biffy fans, I do prefer the older stuff to Puzzle/Revolutions, but that said, I think those two albums are great. Just not as great as the other 3. The last 2 albums are incredibly polished and pretty much every song on them is solid...I just can't help but feel they lack the urgency and imagination of the previous albums.

Ideally, I'd love a set list with equal numbers from all albums, but we all know that aint gonna happen. Honestly, I think we'll be lucky to get more than one song (probably Justboy) in terms of pre-puzzle material, which is kind of a shame. Personally, I have no problem with the direction Biffy have taken musically and commercially...it kind of makes sense that they would ride the popularity wave and go with the radio-friendly image they've achieved for as long as possible. Hell...they worked bloody hard for 10 years to get there, so let them enjoy the success while it lasts. I do find the situation with the live shows a little disappointing now though, to be honest. If I go to a gig, I want to see a band's history being celebrated, not shunned. It just kind of feels like they're trying to disassociate themselves from their old, slightly-erratic image by keeping things post-puzzle. Whether this is their decision or that of their label, who knows...? But either way, I do miss the sheer raw energy and passion of tracks like Eradicate The Doubt and The Go Slow and wish they'd pay homage to the older material a little more in their live shows.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that musically, Biffy have always been brilliant, no matter what kind of sound they produce. I have no problem with the music evolving in whichever direction seems appropriate to the band and their career. It's the band themselves changing that worries me. More than anything, Biffy have always been all about the fan service - extensive (and quite honestly, ridiculous) touring schedules, meet and greets with fans etc...But now it feels a bit like they're ignoring the pleas of the long-time fanbase for older material at gigs, which is a bit of a shame. It would upset me to think that they'd lose that kind of fan-devoted reputation in favour of mainstream success.

I always thought pre-puzzle shows would be a good idea because there clearly is quite a number who would want this at some smaller venues

it would be cool If they done double duty at r&l headlining lock up or fr with a 'pre-puzzle' show after their main stage slot, but I have no idea how the band feel about their older stuff - surely they have a soft spot for it!

If their setlist is:

Bodies in Flight

Justboy

Joy.Discovery.Invention

Questions and Answers

Some Kind of Wizard

Glitter and Trauma

27

Eradicate the Doubt

Jaggy Snake

Kids From Kibble

Toys, Toys, Toys, Choke, Toys, Toys, Toys

57

Now the Action is on Fire!

Asexual Meat Kitchen

Then I'm interested, otherwise I'm off to watch Hatebreed.

Personally, I liked Puzzle and O.R. But I enjoy the older stuff much more. Its got an air of freshness and something a bit special about it, and they still sound new.

Puzzle and O.R are good solid albums with good songs, a few better than others of course, but they seem to grow old quickly and I go through stages where I won't listen to them for weeks at a time, that does not happen with there older albums for me.

I would love them to go on another tour next year (after the O.R tour) playing a range of all thier tracks as opposed to the O.R & Puzzle heavy set-lists thay have been frequenting recently.

I have a feeling that in a couple of years off the back of another album they may be headlining R&L and other festivals when they get to this spot I hope considerations for the older songs is given.

I'm probably most looking forward to Biffy all weekend really.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
