They will always fill up from the furthest carpark, it's just the way they roll. If you come late on the wed you will end up slightly nearer than those who get there for the gates opening. It smells of poo. But once your tent is up and your beer is open you won't care one iota :O)

We've turned up before gate opening times in the past and have always been put in red/orange car parks (the closest ones by a long shot), after going in through red gate 2 from the A64. If you're not wanting to get stuck in brown car park, turn off at junction 46 instead of 45, head along the A64 until you reach the point where you have to turn round, then head back and red gates are on your left (it's all a one way system). If the red gates aren't open on the Wednesday this year for some reason, then you simply hop back on the A1 and head up to junction 45.

I'd only drive along to red gate 2 (maybe red gate 1 but that's usually used for drop off only), then turn round and head back to A1(M) at junction 44. The one way thing isn't so much one way as no entry from Leeds city centre. You drive west along A64, then get turned around and sent back eastward passing gate 1, then 2, then 2a, etc before getting back onto the A1(M). In 2008 there was a tailback on the A64 eastbound all the way from Leeds city centre to the festival, prompting them to block access from Leeds city centre in 2009. Might have changed again but hopefully not. Hope that makes sense.
