There is a large thread somewhere on this subject with lots of opinions stated but plenty of people did see or experience some very unpleasent scenes after football at glasto, didnt see it myself but plenty of others did.

i don't blame anyone on this forum for what's been said, i blame the daily mail, the media in this country in general, and the thousands of non football fans who come out of the woodwork every two years, cover themselves, their houses and their cars with st george crosses and act like tos$ers for two weeks because they think it shows how passionate they are about england, for the fact that everyone is talking about w*nk#rs and violence as soon as football is mentioned.

i've been a season ticket holder at my club since 2000, and attend a dozen away games a season as well, and have travelled to italy and spain to see my team play away in the champions league. thankfully, i've yet to see a fight. i did however see a couple of punches thrown early evening at the other stage on sunday last year. what does this tell us? not a lot. just putting some more cents in there.

I can't find all those comments about how it all kicked of in 2004 anywhere. I was there in 2004, and remember a mellow if slightly down vibe after England lost. The concensus was "we lost, nevermind, who cares, here comes the festival". I didn't see any trouble then. I remember posting on here after the festival - and there wasn't a mention of any trouble either. In the intervening six years there has been no posts that I can recall mentioning any trouble. And it's the sort of thing that would stick out - like the BNP camp on Pennards a few years back, that kind of thing.

Can you point me in the right direction?

Anyone who think there wont be some trouble after the england game - win or lose - is incredibly naive. And dont give me the "but the glastonbury vibe will not allow for trouble!". Utter rubbish. The "glastonbury vibe" doesnt stop robbery does it?

Football at glastonbury is just fundamentally wrong. There is a massive thread somewhere about all this and I suppose it's not worth repeating it all again now.

Yeah we should ban it totally and let all the idiots invade the local area looking for a pub with a tv. That way when it kicks off its just the locals it will impact. Im sure the license wouldnt suffer at all.

It's just another depressing example of the steady commercialisation of the festival.

2004 - it was a huge game - a quarter final - the knockout stages. England lost on penalties.

2010 - it's a group game that England SHOULD win to reach the knockout stages. I don't think it'll be as tense. It should make for a great atmosphere.

I do remember the build up to the game in 2004 and it was not Glastonbury as you know it. Whilst I did not see any trouble, there were lots of alien shouts from groups of people who didn't seem to catch the Glasto vibe. "Rooney...Rooney...Rooney" gets pretty tiresome after a while. After the game, it was subdued for couple of hours before getting back on track as a standard Glastonbury. The atmosphere changed from what seemed like a very laddish football crowd into a much more mellow affair.

Whilst I am a football supporter (and of England at that) part of me hopes that they get knocked out on the Wednesday so that the festival can recover its composure in time for Friday. If they do get past the group stages (which in all likelihood they will) the atmosphere of the festival will be more 'footified' than anything we have ever been used to. People will huddle around TV screens in the markets etc and the outcome of the match will no doubt effect the mood of the site.

NIGHTMARE SCENARIO: Imagine 8.30 on the Saturday (assuming England win the group) being turned over almost completely to footy...watching England lose to Germany on penalties after extra time (cos miraculously they only come 2nd in their group)...and then trying to pick up the mood for the mad dash to see the second half of a headline act because after extra time and penalties it is now 11pm. Granted, if England were to win through it would bring an enormous buzz to the festival. It would be far better if we came 2nd in the group so that the match was on the Sunday afternoon when people are just bimbling around and there is time for Glastonbury to recover in time for Stevie/ Faithless/ Orbital/ whatever floats your boat in the evening.

So here's one vote for the USA and Algeria to bumrape England before we even land on site. That way people can watch the football if they really want to, but most part time footie fans will just get on with the business of enjoying Glastonbury in all its glory.

You knew I was going to agree with everything you said then as you were typing it then I bet.

My main point is if the football is shown, the likelihood of there being trouble is higher than if it is not shown. IF (and yes I admit it is a big if, but the chance remains) that there is some sort of trouble, can you imagine what might happen to the festival? It could never have it's license granted again. All it would take is for england to lose and a group of pissed up Scots to clash with some pissed up English and it could kick off bigtime.

Of course, the chances of this happening are very low and I hope/pray/expect it wont happen. But even if you put the chances at 1% I would rather the football was not shown and have the probability reduced to 0%.

But I understand and accept the reasons why it will be shown (people trying to get off site etc) but I dont have to like it! And this is a forum to bitch and whine on and I reserve my right to do so!
