Who would like to see the freedom brought back to glastonbury? has it lost its purpose of anti establishment and peace, love? Is it too commercial? Were have all the hippies gone? B) Are you one of them? :P

Some sobering crime stats from the last 'pre superfence' festival in 2000. Figures for 2009 are in brackets.

Robbery - Personal: 157 (1)

Theft from Motor Vehicle: 150 (5)

Theft from the Person: 290 (77)

Theft of Motor Vehicle: 43 (3)

Criminal Damage - Motor Vehicle: 30 (0)

Other Theft: 1,519 (269)

Other Wounding: 27 (0)

Possession of Weapons: 8 (1)

Total Excluding Drugs Offences: 2,272 (382)

By 2000 the innocence was lost. There's no going back.

Just a gerneral question really. should it be a free festival that reached out to the everyone, you wont get in on jsa? does this make it a peoples festival, or should ppl go back to stonehenge.

ps i think it should be free and ppl could donate towards it.

I agree precious.

I am guessing the OP wasn't going during the 90's when it was well seedy. I was young at the time and didn't really care that much personally but did hear some freinds had a major problem with dodgy characters mugging people.

Now I am older I must admit to prefering the safety of it all.

Peace.

The festival just reflects the society its a part of. Its the people that go make it what it is. There is no real anti-establishment movement outwith the festival, hence there is no anti-establishment movement within. For the festival to try and foster an anti-establishment culture - well, that's just oxymoronic really isn't it?

Thats whats changed over the years, the 90's broke the spirit of the people who frequented it and the festival moved from a gathering of like minded people to a music festival for the masses.

It can never be the same again, I feel privileged to has seen it change to what it is now from the free willed festival it was.

I (as did Phil) went to a festival called Alchemy this year. I have been trying to put my finger on what it was that made it so special. (for it was) and I think I have finally cracked it. It made me feel free, It reminded me of the 80's when you could walk up to anybody at the festival and talk and it was like you knew them for ever.

Glastonbury has moved on and it could never be free again. But my point is there are loads of small independent festivals out there that are, bar the ticket price..... :)

Strudders... I think you are only half right. There are a fair few people who lived the whole thing in the 90s, in the traveller scene, who are adamant that the 'brew crew' influx was part of the downfall. There's an excellent thread debating this somewhere on here. I'll dig it out when I'm back at a proper PC.

I asked this question on another thread earlier in week but I will ask it again here: Did any of you that went last year see any specific crack-downs on smoking weed? I've never had a problem in previous Glasto's, even the cops never seemed to care. I'm concerned about comments made by a few that they are cracking down on it.
